To promote the country's digitization process, TIM has started the process of shutting down the copper network from Trento, which will allow customers, on a voluntary basis, to switch to new ultra-fast fiber networks.
The Mattarello plant, which serves an area south of the city, is the first nationwide plant entirely wired in fiber with Fiber to the home (FTTH) technology. With this operation, the aforementioned will directly serve homes and offices with super-fast connections ( up to 1 GB ). The migration process will take place progressively on the basis of customer subscriptions. The agreement between the operator, the Autonomous Province and the Municipality of Trento aims to inform citizens and promote in the community the benefits deriving from the adoption of new technologies, which allow a significant increase in the quality of the service.
By doing so, the entire Trentino area will be able to have equal access to services and knowledge, bringing the digital divide between the suburbs and the city to a minimum, also carrying out the goal of becoming the first ' Digital Smart Land ' in the Alps. In fact, during the last year, interventions have been carried out to upgrade the network in 95 municipalities to wire over 100,000 real estate units, thus raising the total number of homes and offices reached by the ultra-broadband to 170,000. The company has also launched a program for FTTH technology cabling in nine cities : in addition to Trento, the plan will involve Rovereto during this year , Pinzolo, Canazei, Tre Ville, Pergine Valsugana, Riva del Garda and, in 2022, Isera and Volano.
Furthermore, the Municipality of Trento recognizes the initiative as suitable for further promoting the Smart City , a project on which the city has already invested and that places it at the top of Italy. And precisely with the aim of creating more and more online structures and services offered by the municipal administration, according to the principles promoted by the Digital Administration Code, the Municipality intends to develop a series of specific initiatives.

“With the start of the copper network shutdown process, we are beginning to write a new chapter in the history of telecommunications in Italy, confirming our commitment to wanting to be an integral part of the country's innovation and digitization process. We therefore start from Trento, an Italian municipality of excellence, to transfer, on a voluntary basis, our customers to the new ultra-fast fiber networks. We are convinced that with the consolidation of this process, which will gradually affect the entire national territory, we will accelerate the process of digitization of citizens, businesses and the Public Administration, at the same time favoring the development of those digital skills necessary to return to growth both in Italy than internationally “.
