The Council of Ministers has approved a law decree establishing the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN), which will have the task of protecting the essential functions of the Italian state from cyber threats and developing the capabilities to prevent and fight them. The agency will operate under the responsibility of the President of the Council of Ministers and the Delegated Authority for the security of the Republic and will have the functions of a national authority on cybersecurity. It will also have to contribute to increasing the security of information and communication technologies of public administrations, operators of essential services and digital service providers of the state, and will be the single national interlocutor for public and private entities in the field of security measures and inspections in the field of national IT security.

As Il Sole 24 Ore wrote, the Agency will initially have 300 employees, which could become 800 in the next few years. The government has not yet made official who will head the agency, but several newspapers write that the position should be entrusted to Roberto Baldoni, professor of distributed systems at the Faculty of Information Engineering of La Sapienza and deputy director of the DIS (Department of information for security), with responsibility for cybersecurity.
