How a laptop suitable for working from home is made

A few months ago, when most of the office workers and all university students started working or studying from home, it was thought that the best thing to do, if possible, was to recreate the same workstations in your home. in the workplace or in the study room.

This is partly a problem for workers, because the idea of reproducing the working conditions of the office at home has little to do with actual smart working, but in Italy and beyond, for now, it is went like this. Therefore, where possible, even at home fixed desks and large computers. Some companies, in some rare cases, even allowed employees to take away the big and bulky computer they had in the office, to work better. Then it became clear that people work differently at home.

Being at the same desk all day with the same computer is difficult for many. There are those who have children at home, when the schools are closed, they have to keep an eye on them, and divide the work between the kitchen table, the living room, the children's room. There are those who live with a partner in turn in smart working, and who, unless they live in a large mansion, will probably end up sharing a table or desk, soon realizing that the partner is often “in call”, something that breaks the concentration, and therefore will take refuge in the bedroom, in the dining room, in search of another, more peaceful point of support. And then, in general: when you have a sofa available, why not use it to work on it for a few hours?

Students also have similar problems: whether they live with their family or together with other students, in addition to having to find a way to isolate themselves acoustically from their roommates, they must be able to find a suitable space for books, notes and computers – and at the same time avoid compromising the health of your back.

For these reasons, smart working and home study work well, perhaps even better, when a laptop is used instead of a computer. Which is meant to work outside, but is surprisingly efficient even when forced to work inside. This is almost never true of business laptops, which are meant for other uses and are usually large and bulky, made of plastic and with the fan starting to spin noisily as soon as you start doing something more expensive than usual. It doesn't even apply to the lower-end laptops that many students use, but not all laptop models are like that.

A good candidate for those who want an improvement is produced by Samsung, it is called Galaxy Book Ion and has perfect characteristics to be a computer with a double life, good both outside the home and inside. In particular, for three reasons. The first is that it has a QLED screen that makes images and videos very sharp, useful for those who work a lot with images (and great if you also use your computer every now and then to watch a TV series or a movie). The second is that it is particularly light and compact. The third is that it allows you to recharge your smartphone even if you don't have the special cable at hand.

However, there are also other reasons to consider working with a Galaxy Book Ion. First of all, it is beautiful to look at, which is not bad: it has an iridescent design (“Aura Silver” is the technical name), that is, it changes color every time the light hits it from a different angle, which sets it apart from other computers portable. It also has an iridescent blue stripe along the side of the zipper, which hides when opened. It is also very light, we said. In the version with the 13-inch screen it weighs less than a kilo (970 grams, to be precise), in the one with the 15-inch screen it weighs between one kilo and twenty and one kilo and thirty, depending on the presence or less of the Graphic card. For comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air weighs 1.29 kilograms. The big difference is that the Galaxy Book Ion is made from magnesium, which is a strong but lighter metal.

Even when you open it (you can do it with one hand, which is not to be taken for granted) the Galaxy Book Ion is pleasant: the inside is the same light and silver color as the outside. The keyboard is backlit but a blue key stands out, which is the fingerprint sensor, to unlock the computer. The bezels around the screen are very thin, which helps to keep the size of the computer small.

The screen is a QLED with excellent technical characteristics: it is bright and with an almost perfect color reproduction fidelity, which allows you to see movies in great quality. Said with a few more technical details, to be precise: sRBG coverage is practically 100 percent while AdobeRGB coverage is 94 percent. If you are into graphic things you already know what we are talking about, otherwise, in two words: the screen of the Galaxy Book Ion is able to reproduce an enormous amount of colors – even many invisible to the human eye – which on the whole make the vision of more enjoyable high-quality content. It is of little use if you only use Office or common office programs, but it improves things if you want to do something more multimedia, even just watch a movie.

Speaking of which: the Galaxy Book Ion's speakers are made in collaboration with AKG, which is a famous headphone and hi-fi company that Samsung bought a few years ago, and this should ensure good sound quality. Plus, in addition to having two standard USB ports and a USB Type-C port, it also has an HDMI port that allows you to connect it to an external TV or monitor without the need for adapters.

For the rest, the technical characteristics of the Galaxy Book Ion are good and in step with the times: the basic configuration includes a tenth generation Intel processor, 256 gigabytes of fast SSD memory, 8 gigabytes of RAM and in general everything you need to a laptop for snappy performance, which shouldn't be a problem under any circumstances.

An interesting aspect is the battery. Lasts up to 20 hours; specifically, the 13-inch model lasts 21.5 hours of video playback, which is an activity that doesn't affect the battery. Twenty hours is an excellent figure, meaning that with average use the computer can be autonomous for the whole day and more. In addition, the computer has fast charging: just charge it for half an hour to be able to use it for four hours.

The Galaxy Book Ion then, as we said, has some interesting precautions regarding charging: the trackpad also works as a wireless charger thanks to the Wireless PowerShare function. If you have a Samsung phone or other device that can be charged wirelessly, just place it on your computer's trackpad to start charging. It can be useful, especially considering that those who work at home often use an external mouse, and therefore have less need for the trackpad; also, when working on the sofa it is better to have as few cables around as possible. If, on the other hand, you are out and about, it is perfect for all those times – it happens to everyone – in which you forget the charging cable at home.
