How to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free

Moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free is still possible, although Microsoft doesn't advertise that possibility much. The step could prove useful especially following Microsoft's decision to discontinue technical support for Windows 7, an operating system which it now considers outdated and which for this reason has stopped receiving security updates since January 14. Anyone who uses a computer with Windows 7 (or 8.1), and therefore has a regular operating system license, can switch to Windows 10 without having to purchase a new license. Of course, the switch implies that your computer is powerful enough to handle the latest version of Microsoft's operating system.

How to upgrade for free from Windows 7 to Windows 10
Before starting the upgrade to Windows 10 it is advisable to consult this page, in which Microsoft lists the specifications and necessary requirements to make sure the new operating system works normally, without slowing down your computer. For the less experienced, it could be a bit complicated to find your way around the various indications, but the page is clearly written and we recommend that you especially consider the part dedicated to “system requirements”.

Backup
Having ascertained that your computer will run Windows 10, it is advisable to make a backup of all the most important data you have on your computer, saving them on an external memory (SD card, USB key or external hard drive) . Save documents, images, videos, music files and everything you never want to lose: better save something more than less. Upgrading to Windows 10 shouldn't result in any data loss and you should find all your files after the installation is complete, but better be cautious in case something goes wrong.

Program Compatibility
Windows 10 works differently from Windows 7 and this could have some effect on the programs you already have installed and are used to using. For the most common ones – perhaps produced by Microsoft itself as Office – you shouldn't have any difficulties, while for the less popular ones it is advisable to check that they have versions compatible with the new operating system (a Google search is sufficient).

Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10
After the backup and the verification of program compatibility, visit the Windows 10 page to download the operating system. On the page there is a link to download an operating system installation tool, download and run it. A window will appear in which to choose the option “Update your PC now”. In the next steps the system will ask if you want to keep your files or start a fresh installation. The first option is recommended if you want to keep the data, but remember that some programs and settings may disappear.

Your computer will take some time to download your copy of Windows 10, install it, and update your computer. When done, the operating system license should become visible in Settings> Updates & Security> Activation.

To make updating procedures easier, Microsoft also provides FAQs and a “Windows 10 Update Assistant”.
