TikTok, the short video social network controlled by a Chinese company, apologized to a user for removing a popular video criticizing the Chinese government for its repression of Muslim Uighur minorities in Xinjiang province: “Due to an error of human moderation, the viral video of November 23 has been removed. It is important to clarify that nothing in our guidelines prohibits content like that in this video and that it should not have been removed. ” The video was then put back online and the account of the user who had uploaded it was reactivated.
The video was uploaded by a 17-year-old American woman who, pretending to explain how to curl her eyelashes, talked about violence against Muslim minorities in China. After the blocking of TikTok, the video had also started to circulate on other social networks and had ended up in newspapers all over the world.
