Alphabet, the company that controls Google, will buy smartwatch maker Fitbit for $ 2.1 billion

The Fitbit smartwatch company, which specializes mainly in devices that detect physical activity, will be bought by Alphabet, the company that controls Google, for 2.1 billion dollars (about 1.8 billion euros). The news of Alphabet's offer had already circulated in recent days, but now the agreement has been reached and the acquisition is expected to close in 2020.

Fitbit makes many smartwatches and trackers, which work with both Android smartphones and iPhones (with some limitations). For some years it has intensified its presence in the real smartwatch sector with the Versa series, which aesthetically is very much inspired by the Apple Watch, starting with the rectangular dial. Google wrote in an announcement that it wants to invest more in “wearable devices”, as smartwatches and the like are called, whose market is now dominated by Apple and Samsung. Fitbit ranks third in smartwatch sales, with 1.2 million devices sold in 2019.
