On Tuesday, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport authorized for the first time the testing of cars that drive themselves on some Italian public roads, in Turin and Parma. The Directorate General for Motorization has granted the possibility to proceed with the tests to the company VisLab Srl, controlled by the American company Ambarella, which so far is the only one to have requested authorization. VisLab was founded in the early nineties as a laboratory of the University of Parma and has been a real company since 2009; was purchased by Ambarella, which produces semiconductors and is based in Santa Clara, California, in 2015. The ministry explained to the Press that the road sections on which the trials will take place will be indicated by special signs, while the councilor for innovation of Turin Paola Pisano said that in any case the tests will take place with a person behind the wheel of the cars, who will check that everything is going well.
