The best case for the iPhone X

Wirecutter, the New York Times product review site, tested nearly 70 iPhone X protective cases to find the best one – a particularly useful operation given that the iPhone X is the most expensive phone Apple ever sold and so is the most expensive to repair and perhaps the most fragile, as the back is made of glass like the screen. In the end, the choice fell on a case that combines a not excessive thickness, good protection, a pleasant appearance from an aesthetic point of view and a not too high price. On Amazon you can find it for 13.90 euros: it's called Base Grip and Silk, a Texan company produces it.

To test the iPhone X cases, the editors of Wirecutter used them in turn for some time; they did not try to drop the smartphones, but they observed the damage that occurred as a result of accidental falls. The evaluation criteria used to judge them have, among other things, taking into account the minimum thickness recommended by Apple on the edges, which when an iPhone is placed with the screen on a surface should prevent this from scratching it. Cases that have a hole in the back to show the Apple logo were excluded as the hole was deemed unnecessary embellishment.

Base Grip cases are made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a flexible plastic material. Their peculiarity is the roughness of the surface, baptized “Kung Fu Grip” by Silk: it is designed to produce friction between the case and the skin and be as less slippery as possible. According to Wirecutter reviewers, this surface proves to be better than the case price would suggest. As for cushioning, the Base Grip cases have small hollow spaces on the corners, which should perform an airbag function for the smartphone. Another feature that Wirecutter reviewers rated the case well for is the fact that it doesn't make it any harder than normal to press the volume and lock screen keys.

The Base Grip cases allow you to charge iPhones even using wireless chargers – among those Wirecutter recommends this, from Samsung – and are available in various colors: blue, gray, purple, burgundy and black.

Obviously Silk also produces protective cases for other smartphone models, such as iPhone 7 and 8 and iPhone 7 and 8 Plus: they are the cases judged best by Wirecutter for these models.
