US puts DJI and other Chinese drone companies on its blacklist

Bad news for the world's most popular drone maker. The United States Department of the Treasury has updated its blacklist of technology companies to include a number of Chinese companies, including DJI.

DJI is one of the most famous manufacturers of drones and video and photo equipment in the world, and one of the Chinese technology companies with the greatest international projection in this segment. But it was not the only one.

In all, the United States has added eight companies, believing that they actively support biometric surveillance and monitoring of ethnic and religious minorities in China, particularly the Uighur minority. In the case of DJI, the US Treasury considers that its parent company, SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd. (SZ DJI), has provided drones to the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau which are used to monitor Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

For the United States Government, the Xinjiang Public Security Office is included in EO 13818, a designation applicable to those foreign entities responsible, complicit, or who have participated directly or indirectly in serious human rights abuses. .

Blacklisting a company is not just political action. The direct result is that it directly prohibits Americans from buying or selling certain listed securities related to these entities.

Along with DJI, the following companies are listed on the Treasury Department's “Chinese Military-Industrial Complex” list:

Cloudwalk Technology Co., Ltd. Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd. Leon Technology Company LimitedMegvii Technology LimitedNetposa Technologies LimitedSZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd.Xiamen Meiya Pico Information Co., Ltd.Yitu Limited At the moment, it does not seem that its inclusion implies a ban on the commercialization of its products , neither for the United States nor for government companies. But it does limit the possibility of being able to invest in their securities.

DJI, in addition to being the most important, is also one of the providers of the North American federal agencies. In fact, a few months ago the FBI and the Secret Service bought surveillance drones from DJI. Although at the time of the purchase, in September, the Pentagon already warned that the company's products “represent potential threats to national security.”
