Farewell to Rewind: YouTube cancels its annual recap video forever

YouTube has announced the final goodbye to the YouTube Rewind , the popular annual summary video where the company brought together the biggest youtubers, the most famous memes and the trends that have elapsed throughout the year . The platform, remember, canceled the 2020 edition due to the pandemic. However, the previous videos did not stand out precisely for the quality of the content, but for the large number of “Dislikes”.

YouTube received a high amount of criticism in recent years for videos where even users who were not part of the platform appeared, such as Will Smith or Ninja. However, it has confirmed to Tubefilter that the cause is not the negative comments . According to the company, the platform has become so large that it is “impossible to encapsulate its vastness and diversity” in a compilation video lasting a few minutes.

That is why it leaves the door open to that it is the creators who produce their own Rewinds . Thus providing greater creativity and a different style to what YouTube did until now. “It will continue to be inspiring to see the ways in which the world's most creative content producers, our YouTube creators, encapsulate the end of the year in their own video highlights, as YouTube retires its own Rewind video.” Comments a YouTube spokesperson.

The aforementioned medium ensures that YouTube will not offer any type of financing to creators who want to make their own annual summary. However, it will promote the content on its channels and social networks.

The first YouTube Rewind was published in 2010, but it wasn't until 2012 that the platform began inviting YouTubers to make a cameo appearance in the annual recap video. In 2018, the Rewind called “Everyone Controls Rewind”, quickly became the video with the most “I don't like” in all of YouTube . It was also harshly criticized by Internet users. Not only because of its boring theme, but because important trends were not covered during that year and users who were not really part of the platform appeared.

The YouTube Rewind 2019 was a little better than last year, but it also received numerous reviews and millions of “Dislikes”. Finally, the company canceled the 2020 compilation video because of the unusual year that the pandemic left.
