Millions of players continue to spend a small fraction of their time on a game that was not even originally intended to take over the online world. The goal of Josh Wardle , the Welsh programmer who came up with the hugely popular Wordle during the lockdown, was completely different: to surprise his girlfriend, Palak Shah, true crossword devourer. And that crossword puzzle that initially fascinated friends and relatives, has become one of the viral phenomena of the web especially in the last period, thanks to the power of social networks. On the most famous digital platforms of the web (and in particular Twitter ), it is in fact possible to share the results of your own match of Wordle , and from November 1st to today there are millions and millions of tweets on the subject.
To decree the success of Wordle are above all the social networks . The game has literally conquered America and English-speaking countries, but checking Twitter well it is not uncommon to come across “chirps” from all over the world, including Italy. A simple game, but which in fact unites everyone in a single daily challenge: fill a chessboard to find the word of the day chosen at random each day from the program among 2,500 English terms. Three starting points: it will take six letters to complete the missing word, there will be six attempts available and three clues that will certainly be very useful during the game. Fantasy and ingenuity will take care of the rest, but above all the desire to beat the unknown users of the network to the sound of statistics.
Wordle is certainly not innovative, as it rather vaguely recalls some classic games that we certainly all know a bit, such as MasterMine and the Lyricist . The confirmation that simple things are what they do best, especially if they can be shared on social networks. A daily appointment that unites different and distant people, in a common challenge that breaks down distances.
To play Wordle any device connected to the Internet is sufficient: just access the following page using any browser and you're done, or better just started. No apps to download or other types of advertising, even if someone has already dabbled in creating real alternatives, even in Italian. The screen is very simple but effective and by clicking on the buttons in the top bar, you will have access to some simple settings to change the theme of the site (dark or light mode), strengthen the contrast and recall the statistics of the match after finishing the challenge daily.
As mentioned before, the goal of Wordle is to guess the word of the day, which must in any case make sense and be included in the list, otherwise it will not be counted among the attempts. To do this you will have six attempts and three color clues:
- Black : the letter is in no case part of the final word;
- Yellow : the letter is present in the final word, but it is not in that position;
- Green : the letter is present in the final word and is in the identified position
By exploiting the clues and spending your attempts well, you can compose the daily word using a pinch of logic and imagination. Some tips are already available on the net to find the word on Wordle , such as the tool created by Dharmesh Shah to evaluate the “quality” of the first word inserted into the game. Some other users, on the other hand, prefer to use the word “Adieu” given the high density of vowels.
The game will last a few seconds or a few minutes: a lot will depend on the user's commitment. Exhausted the attempts available without having found the word, Wordle will postpone the player to the next day, with a countdown that will mark the wait for the new challenge. Those who solve the problem will be able to share their result via a button, without however revealing the word to others.
As mentioned before, the success of Wordle has given rise to alternative solutions and on the Internet there are also some Italianized versions of the most trending game of this beginning of 2022. If you are looking for a challenge that incorporates the exact same mechanics as Wordle , but without the limit of the one word every day, then you can dabble with Hello Wordl , developed by Twitter user @ chordbug : it has the same gameplay as the original, but it differs in the fact that it is possible to play it endlessly and change the length of the hidden word, choosing words between four to eleven letters. But there is a limit: it is not possible to share the results on Twitter.
