As soon as it arrived on our desk, we immediately understood that the new Caldigit SOHO Dock is not a product to be underestimated. Powerful, capable and versatile, it is the best friend of any Mac or PC, even if only one detail is missing that we will discover later.
A careful design that doesn't hurt
Inside the box, accompanying the Caldigit SOHO Dock is a 50 cm black coaxial USB-C 3.2 cable (connectors included), with external thermoplastic elastomer coating and internally gold-plated connectors.
The shape of the Dock is that of a parallelepiped, whose dimensions of 9.2 × 6.4 × 1.6 cm make it fit well in the bag, also and above all for the rounded corners that do not get caught in the pockets.
The construction is in satin gray metal, slightly lighter than the dark gray of the MacBook Pro, while the two sides with the connectors are in black plastic.
Each connector is accompanied by a small wording or symbol, so as not to get confused, an important detail that, over time, knows how to assert itself because not all ports are used frequently, and it happens to have to use a door on the fly and not remember it the details.
Although, it must be said, at the time of this writing all ports are at their maximum capacity.
1 of 6
Six doors plus one
The Caldigit SOHO Dock has seven ports: the first, slightly hollowed out, is the one that connects the HUB to the computer with a USB-C 3.2 connection at 10 Gb / s.
On one side there is a second USB-C port for power supply, up to 100W of power delivery, therefore all portable Macs on the market today, even if with the 16 “model it will charge a little more slowly and also all the Laptops, excluding some gamer models.
it is kept in your pocket
On the same side two video ports, one HDMI 2.0b and one DisplayPort 1.4, both with the ability to carry a 4K 60Hz video stream with single HDR, or two FullHD 60Hz together, or two 4K 30Hz always together.
The detail of 60/30 Hz is very important, because most of the cheap HUBs on the market support a single FullHD or 4K video signal at 30 Hz, while here we have double the refresh rate, which means a smoother video signal and that tires (much) less the view, as well as the minimum wage if you work with the video.
Convenient in mobile, it is also suitable for Desktop use, where a pair of USB-C ports and an SD reader never hurts.
On the other hand, two USB ports, one with USB-C connector and one with USB-A connector, both 3.2, therefore with capacities up to 10 Gb / s and retro-compatible (even if designed for fast SSD disks, nothing prevents you from connecting a mouse or keyboard).
On the same side, two SD and microSD 4.0 (UHS-II) card readers: the card reader is made with gold-plated connectors to better support the high data flow of fast cards (like this one).
Compared to most of the HUBs on the market, the SOHO Dock allows you to drive two displays at the same time
On the move, but not only
The small and square shape suggests its use on the move, where positioning takes just a few seconds: next to a MacBook Pro it fits very well, but in our opinion it does not even disdain being next to an iMac or a Mac mini (although in that case we see a more desktop product like the Caldigit TS3 Plus much better).
In the MacBook Pro we connected a Logitech StreamCam (via USB-C), a Razer Seiren Mini microphone (via USB-A), an LG 32UL950 display transforming the small 13 “MacBook Pro into a webinar station: connecting the charger to the input connector, the computer was also powered.
To look for a defect, let's say that the writer would have sacrificed a video port in order to have an Ethernet RJ45 connector, but then it also depends on the use.
HUBs have become very common mainly due to the need to have (at least) a USB-A port for disks and flash drives
Considerations
This writer has been lucky enough to try USB-C HUBs and Docks of all kinds, from the cheapest to the most important ones and we can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the best USB-C HUB ever tried, in all respects of sight (to get more you need to opt for Thunderbolt 3 or 4, with other costs and other features).
Powerful, attentive to details, solid but above all capable of making all the devices connected to work at their best: the professional who travels a lot (or who will travel a lot, we are optimistic) but who needs a portable but capable workstation must evaluate an accessory like this one, even if the cost is clearly important, even in relation to the capacities.
Caldigit SOHO Dock is also convenient for having a display (or projector) connected to the iPad: here it is limited to duplicating the screen, because on iPadOS currently cannot use desktop extension
Pro:
• Powerful, versatile, comfortable • Sober design and attention to detail • Fits comfortably in your bag and pocket
Cons:
• Missing an Ethernet port • A little expensive
Price:
• 91.66 Euro
