On June 11, Sony PlayStation showed for the first time the controversial design of its new console and many video games in action, including also Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil 8, Marvel's Spider-Man Morales and Horizon Zero Dawn 2. PS4

PS4, also known as PlayStation 4, is the fourth incarnation of the famous Sony PlayStation home released as far back as November 29, 2013 in Europe. It is one of the best-selling consoles of recent years (over 100 million units) and, at least at the moment, it has not suffered from the passing of the years. Almost four years have passed since its launch, but nevertheless the largest software houses and the largest publishers continue to actively churn out titles dedicated to her that sometimes compete on almost equal terms with their counterparts dedicated to Windows PCs.

Hopefully PS4 should give you up-to-date games and more than decent graphics at least until 2022. In the meantime, what games can you entertain yourself with? Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo Sport, Detroit and Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, plus many others like Uncharted 4, World of Final Fantasy, Bloodborne , The Last of Us 2 and all titles dedicated to PlayStation VR, Sony's virtual reality headset.

PS4 is a model that we could easily define as old. As mentioned previously, Sony's console should have a quiet life until 2022, but this model has been replaced by PS4 Slim, a more compact model but equipped with the same hardware. At Christmas or for other occasions you could therefore find the classic model at prices far lower than those applied by the eshop.

PS4 Slim

PS4 Slim is the version of Sony's console released on September 15, 2016 , whose task was to supplant the standard PS4 model. The differences are to be found practically only from a constructive and dimensional point of view. As the name suggests, the PS4 Slim is thinner (39mm versus the standard model's 53mm) and less bulky. The differences at the hardware level are to be found in the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, obviously more up-to-date, and in the reduced maximum consumption. Ah, we almost forgot: inside there is the new version of the DualShock controller, with slightly revised dimensions and with the new semi-transparent central pad that reveals the light bar typical of the fourth version of the controller.

As for the exclusive games, the same speeches made on PS4 apply (take a look): a good number of titles on the way, some exclusive (rather greedy) already available and all the games dedicated to PlayStation VR, which still require the additional purchase of the headset and PlayStation Camera.

Here the matter becomes more interesting and, why not, even more tangled. There are two variants of the PS4 Slim, one with a 500 GB hard drive, one with 1 TB. Both can then be found, both online and in physical stores, bundled with additional controllers and / or with ready-to-play video games.

Below we link some purchase proposals of the two versions on Amazon and ePRICE, but check carefully, both in the store and on online stores such as those we offer, for any offers related above all to bundles with video games. Let's not forget that a new title costs around € 60/70.

PS4 Pro

Sony launched its new PS4 Pro on the market starting from November 10, 2016 at the recommended price of € 409.99. Three years after the launch of PS4, an enhanced model arrives that boasts renewed hardware and support for the latest 4K TV panels. Why do we place it on this list? PS4 Pro is equipped with many hardware improvements that make it the second most powerful console available on the market. And what exactly does he do with all this power?

Better graphic effects for the 1080p versions and the possibility of upscaling with a particular technique that allows you to play in 4K on special televisions. There is no shortage of HDR support, the new DualShock and graphic improvements also for video games dedicated to PlayStation VR. So is the game worth the candle? It depends: PS4 Pro costs 410 €, a fairly high figure considering that the life time of the product could amount to about a year and a half or a little more. The fact remains that if you play PS4 frequently and have a 4K TV available, you may want to consider this variant to make the most of your TV. Also not to be underestimated is the presence of a 1 terabyte hard-disk inside.

As for the exclusive games, the same speeches made on PS4 (take a look) and beyond apply. PS4 Pro will have a big advantage, that is, additional visual effects for quite a few games, including many already released on the market that will receive (or have already received) updates with graphic improvements dedicated to this variant.

The PS4 Pro list price is set at € 409.99. Obviously, over time there have been more or less significant drops. But finding it is not that easy.

Below is the list of the best branded consoles Microsoft , which started the line-up of its consoles with the glorious Xbox back in 2001 (in the United States, in Europe in 2002 ).

Xbox Series X

The official name is Xbox Series X. On paper, Microsoft's new console promises 120 fps, 8K maximum resolution, SSD, 2x the graphics power of an Xbox One X, hardware-level Ray Tracing support and much more.

Regarding resolution and frame rate, the Xbox Series X is capable of playing games in 4K at 60 fps. In some cases we will go up to 120 fps , and thanks to the Variable Refresh Rate (a sort of G-Sync / FreeSync), Xbox will adapt to monitors or televisions with high refresh rates. There has even been talk of 8K, without going into too much detail. Xbox Series X will then be equipped with a 1 TB SSD expandable through proprietary SSD cards. In any case, external hard drives can also be used via USB 3.2.

Xbox Series X arrived in Italy on November 10 at 499 €. Buying it, however, is not child's play. We advise you to keep an eye on the main pages of the Italian online stores, on some it is still available:

  • Amazon
  • MediaWorld
  • Unieuro
  • Euronics

Here is the complete data sheet:

  • CPU : Custom Zen 2 octa-core at 3.8 GHz ( 3.66 GHz w / SMT), 7 nm
  • GPU : Custom RDNA 2 12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs at 1.825 GHz , Ray Tracing, Variable Rate Shading

  • Memory internal : SSD Custom 1 TB NVME

  • Dimensions : 15.1 x 15.1 x 30.1 cm
  • Ports : HDMI 2.1 output, 3 x USB 3.02, Etherne t, power, memory slot

Here is the complete review of Series X, in which we rattle off various topics including hardware, software, performance, games and services of the next-gen console from Microsoft.

Xbox Series S

On September 8, 2020, somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft unveiled the existence of the Xbox Series S, the less powerful sister of Series X which still has the goal of bringing the next-gen in people's living rooms. Such as? Making you spend less! The introductory price amounts to just € 299.

The lower price translates into less raw power. Furthermore, also from a resolution point of view we are on full HD and QHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), therefore far from the 4K (or even 8K) of Xbox Series X. In any case, Series S will be able to rely on some of the best technologies present on board the older sister. The optical driver is missing. It is therefore a console that relies exclusively on the digital format of video games.

Xbox Series S arrived in Italy on November 10, 2020 for € 299. You can try to buy it at the main online shops in Italy:

  • Amazon
  • MediaWorld
  • Unieuro
  • Euronics
  • CPU : Custom Zen 2 octa-core at 3.8 GHz (16 threads, 3 , 66 GHz w / SMT), 7 nm
  • GPU : Custom Navi RDNA 2, 4 TFLOPS, 20 CU @ 1,550 GHz, Ray Tracing, Variable Rate Shading
  • RAM : 10 GB GDDR6
  • Memory : PCIe 4.0 SSD, 512 GB, 2.4 GB / s uncompressed, 4.8 GB / s compressed
  • Expansion : up to 1 TB via proprietary card
  • Performance : up to QHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), up to 120 fps, 4K upscaling
  • Output video : HDMI 2.1

Xbox One

Microsoft's Xbox One is PS4's direct competitor console released on November 22, 2013 . Most players, with the exception of Nintendo fans or those who want to have all the gaming machines available, choose between Xbox One or PS4. The console from Microsoft does not miss anything from a hardware point of view (it is on par with the standard PS4) and has one of the best gaming controllers on the square. However, Xbox One isn't just a console, it's a real home entertainment machine. Xbox One OS is obviously inspired by Windows, and brings with it many features typical of a PC. However, the console has been supplanted by Xbox One S and later models.

Even Microsoft's Xbox One can count on many exclusive titles. A few examples? Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 4 (if you like racing games it's a must), Gears 5, Quantum Break or Sunset Overdrive. All this without counting the many cross-platform productions that land on this platform every month, of course!

If you have read the paragraphs dedicated to PS4 and PS4 Slim, the speech is very similar. Microsoft has replaced the base model of Xbox One with Xbox One S and One X. However, consider your purchase carefully: it may be preferable to choose Xbox Series S.

Xbox One S

Xbox One S was launched by Microsoft starting on August 2, 2016 . It is, as it is easy to guess, of an improvement of the Xbox One . What are the strengths of the device? Support for 4K Blu-ray, absent from PS4 Pro or any other console, possibility of upscaling games on 4K screens or televisions and support for HDR.

The hardware changes are minimal: a little more power for the GPU and the optical player that is capable of reading 4K Blu-rays. However, the advantages do not end there: Xbox One S is much more compact, lighter and integrates the power supply inside.

The same goes for the PS4 Slim (and partly for PS4 Pro) towards the starting console: even the exclusive games of Xbox One S are the same as those of Xbox One. You should therefore follow this link to read the paragraph where we talk about it.

This version can also be found bundled with a large number of games, such as Gears of War 4. It is available in 500GB and 1TB denominations, there is also a (rare) 2TB version.

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, an edition of the Xbox One S that does not have the optical reader for physical media, joins Microsoft's stable. The console focuses on digital, on the new Xbox Game Pass Unlimited, and on the presence in the sales package of 3 video games: Minecraft, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 3.

Xbox One S All-Digital is available on Amazon Italy. The list price amounts to € 229.99. Please note that included in the sales package are the codes for digital copies of Forza Horizon 3, Minecraft and Sea of Thieves.

The technical characteristics are practically the same as Xbox One S, with the big difference that there is no optical drive to read Blu-ray. There is only one version with 1 TB memory cut.

Xbox One X

A real monster of power before the arrival of Xbox Series X, thanks to its 6 TFLOPS of graphics power and its 12 GB of RAM. The introductory price was € 499. To start, let's take a look at the data sheet compared to that of the PS4 Pro.

Below is the technical data sheet of Xbox One X compared to its most direct competitor: Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro.

It's not that hard to find Xbox One X online or in brick and mortar stores. The introductory price is € 499.99. There is also a special version called Project Scorpio, which is far rarer and even more expensive.

There has obviously also been a lot of talk about games, although it must be admitted that there are no major exclusives at the moment. If nothing else, the vast majority of triple A titles are already updated with 4K graphics.

The world of home consoles owes a lot to Nintendo . NES and SNES have contributed a lot to the growth of the sector, and let's not forget the Nintendo 64, the Game Boy and the Nintendo Wii, one of the most successful consoles of the famous Japanese giant. So here is the list of the best Nintendo consoles .

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo's hybrid console made its market debut on March 3, 2017 . It is useless to define it as an evolution of the Nintendo Wii U, and it is equally useless to compare it to the current generation of consoles. This is because Switch is a product in its own right, which makes adaptability its strong point. Home console and portable console in one product; even the controller adapts, splitting one-on-one or coming together to form a more classic single player controller.

As of writing this page, the Nintendo Switch line-up isn't exactly overwhelming. Its flagship title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is not a Switch exclusive, since it is a product dedicated to Nintendo Wii U. At the Nintendo showcase we still had the opportunity to try out some exclusives such as Splatoon. 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Fast: RMX and more. We also recommend that you take a look at the article linked below.

  • Nintendo Switch Games

As usual, it can be found in physical stores at the launch price, equal to € 329.99. However, it is also possible to buy it on classic e-commerce sites which sometimes offer more favorable prices. It comes in two versions, with gray Joy-Con or colored Joy-Con.

As mentioned in the introduction, it is a bit useless to make a comparison even of a technical nature with the current consoles from Sony and Microsoft. It is however interesting to see what are the hardware characteristics of such a peculiar console.

  • Screen : 6.2 ″ IPS LCD HD, 1,280 x 720 pixels, multi-point touchscreen (up to 10)
  • Processor : NVIDIA Tegra ODNX02 -A2
    • CPU : ARM Cortex-A57 quad core 2GHz 64-bit, L2 cache (2MB)
    • GPU : NVIDIA 256 CUDA core 1 GHz, Maxwell architecture
    • TFLOPS : FP32 peak at 0.512 TFLOPS, FP16 peak at 1.024 TFLOPS
  • RAM : 4GB, two Samsung 2GB LPDDR4 modules, 25.6GB / s bandwidth
  • Internal memory : 32 GB, transfer-rate up to 400 MB / s, expandable via microSD
  • Battery : 4.310 mAh
  • Dimensions : 102 mm x 239 mm x 13.9 mm (with Joy-Con)
  • Weight : 297 g (tablet body), 398 g (with Joy-Con inserted)
  • Connectivity : USB Type-C, audio jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooh 4.1, LAN (requires additional adapter)
  • Reader : proprietary cards
  • Speaker : Stereo, 48 kHz, 16 -bit, 7.1ch
  • Audio Output : maximum 192 kHz, 24-bit, 7.1ch
  • Temperatures : about 25 ° – 40 ° (tablet mode)

Nintendo Switch OLED

Nintendo Switch OLED arrives on the market at the end of summer 2021. It is a variant of the basic model with substantially a larger screen, this time made in OLED technology. The resolution and refresh rate remain unchanged. The goal was to propose a console that, in portable mode, offered a better user experience without upsetting the ecosystem.

Nintendo Switch OLED has been selling quite fast. We suspect that it is also due to the shortage of stocks and components that has affected all sectors, including the videogame one. In any case, if you do not find it available on Amazon you can go elsewhere, such as MediaWorld and Unieuro . Take a look at the boxes below.

Let's see the differences between the three Nintendo Switches on the market and with the excuse let's also take a look at the technical characteristics of the new OLED model.

Among the other peculiarities of the OLED model we also find a rear stand completely redesigned (the original one in fact was not that great) and the doubled internal memory . We also find some differences in the dock, which finally also integrates a LAN port for more stable online sessions.

Nintendo Switch Lite

On 10 July 2019 Nintendo unveils Nintendo Switch Lite, a “reduced” version in size, price and functionality of its flagship console. It boasts a smaller screen, built-in controllers that don't detach, and among other things, it also lacks the ability to connect it to your TV. In short, a real portable console, which sacrifices part of the advantages of Nintendo Switch while boasting a much lower price.

Among its most illustrious shortcomings there is certainly the absence of the HD rumble, of some of the sensors present in the Joy-Con, the aforementioned TV mode and, more than a lack, the difficulty in playing it locally given the absence of the kickstand and the smaller screen size. However, the size of the screen and the pixel density make the image more defined than on the classic Switch.

Where to buy it

Nintendo Switch Lite arrives on the market on September 20 at 219 €. On Amazon it is already available at reduced prices.

Nintendo Wii U

Nintendo Wii U, released in Europe on November 30, 2012 , will certainly not be remembered as the most successful Nintendo console. It is a device halfway between what is proposed by Nintendo Wii and what will be proposed by Nintendo Switch, the next console to which we have dedicated a special paragraph below. To be honest, it will also be increasingly difficult to find around: Nintendo is slowly interrupting production, also in view of the new console. The fact remains that the style of play offered is at least original, given that the huge gaming pad integrates a touch display, plus all the physical controls of the case and even a camera, various motion sensors, speakers, vibration, a stylus and NFC support.

Nintendo Wii U certainly does not lack exclusive games. This is because Nintendo has always preserved a number of famous brands for its home and portable devices. Then find titles such as the recent Mario Kart, the hilarious Splatoon, Paper Mario: Color Splash, the sci-fi Xenoblade Chronicles and many other video games available for other platforms, such as the recent toys-to-life LEGO Dimensions and Skylanders Imaginators.

Nintendo Wii U has become extremely difficult to buy.
