HomeReviews Dental hygiene now passes from electric toothbrushes, which have become one of the most used products in everyday life. Many exponents of the genre, each of which tries to convince the user with different features. There are those who, like usmile, try to combine the cleaning functions with aesthetics. The toothbrush under test, usmile Y1S, is inspired by Roman columns. A truly extravagant choice.
Unboxing
Before even talking about the aesthetics, let's focus on the contents of the package, rather rich. In addition to the toothbrush, in fact, the unboxing also offers various accessories. First of all the USB-C charging cable, flanked by the instruction manual, by two identical interchangeable heads, and by a practical magnetic closure case, which allows you to house the toothbrush and heads, so you can take it on the road without any worries.
This will keep it safe from damage. There is no charging dock: unlike other competitors, in fact, there is no station to house it, with charging that will take place only via USB-C.
How it's done
Let's move on to aesthetics, one of the features that most differentiates this product from others of the same kind. It is clearly inspired by the Roman columns. This is understood even before unboxing. On the sales package, in fact, quite colorful Roman columns are depicted, even if the toothbrush is currently on sale only in two shades: the one being tested, green, another pink, certainly more suitable for a female audience.
The column, in practice, is reproduced on the entire handle of the toothbrush. This is certainly a curious and original choice, which certainly distances this Y1S from its competitors. The choice can be liked or not, considering that the extravagant shape of the handle makes it lose its softness in the grip, instead presenting much harder lines and strokes. There is also no rubber that can make the grip softer.
Overall, however, net of personal tastes, the aesthetics do not mind, and the lively color helps the toothbrush to present itself well. On the one hand the shade gives it that playful aspect that could attract even a smaller user to use, on the other hand the shape and style give it a certain elegance. The power button, then, is accompanied by a small bronze-colored circle, again to give it a more “aristocratic” look.
The head, on the other hand, is almost entirely white, while the bristles recall the green tone of the main “column”, even if darker.
The plastic that makes up the body is particularly solid and very robust . While it has no hint of softness, it is still easy to grip, with the pattern probably allowing it to better absorb and distribute vibrations for a more comfortable cleaning. The embossed strips on the whole body of the handle still allow a good grip, even if splashes of water get it wet.
The two heads included in the package, to be hooked and unhooked simply to the main body, have the shape of the bristles classic, are moderately rigid, and the elongated shape with two depressions allow the brush to be placed on the dental arch ensuring a rather deep cleaning.
As already mentioned, there is no charging base. On the bottom, covered by a small plastic cap, with a gasket around it, there is the USB-C input , which will allow easy charging with the cable included in the box, but with any other USB-C cable you have at home.
On the one hand, it is a charging system that offers maximum compatibility, because you can easily find a USB-C cable; on the other hand, the absence of a dock weighs when it is necessary to place it on the bathroom shelf. It is true that the final flat shape helps to lay it on any shelf, but a dock would have allowed for a more secure housing.
The travel case is very popular : it looks a lot like hard cases for glasses but obviously it is longer in how much the handle must accommodate, while the two heads must be detached for transport. It is built really well, it is sturdy and apparently able to withstand even the weight of clothes and other objects that could be stored on it.
Operation
It is not a connected electric toothbrush, so the functions are essential, but more than enough for its use. The On / Off button allows you to start the vibration: just press once to turn on the toothbrush, the second and third time to adjust the operating mode and the fourth to pause; if you do not keep pressing the button, the toothbrush will turn off.
Below this button there is an icon in plain sight that indicates the charging status: green for a charged toothbrush, flashing red, when it needs to be recharged.
Below the battery indicator, on the other hand, there are three LEDs , alongside as many modes brushing. The first, normal, the second excavation, the third soft. In fact, we could translate these three modes, respectively, into normal, highest vibration, and lowest vibration.
The cleaning effectiveness seemed very good to us. Certainly thanks to the sonic technology, which in this case allows to reach 38,000 revolutions per minute , a fact certainly important when it comes to cleaning power. Even in the soft mode we noticed a certain “energy” of the toothbrush. So much so that during cleaning it is necessary to always keep the mouth closed, to avoid splashing the mirror, sink and the entire bathroom.
We have already said that it is not a smart toothbrush, yet it has intelligent timer functions. In fact, every 30 seconds, it emits a vibration, so as to let the user know when it is time to change the cleaning area. At the second minute, however, the toothbrush emits three vibrations, while at the fourth minute it switches off automatically.
Being a toothbrush with sonic technology, it uses the high intensity vibration to break up and remove plaque during daily cleaning sessions.
On its side, this toothbrush also has Dupont diamond bristles, with over 2400 filaments. It is IPX7 waterproof , so that it can be used comfortably under running water, even if the advice is to be careful on the lower part, where the cap insists. 'USB-C input.
As for autonomy, integrates a 2500 mAh battery , which recharges in about 6 hours, but which ensures a duration of about 180 days with normal use, therefore about 10 minutes a day.
Conclusions
Net of aesthetics, which obviously reflects the personal tastes of each, this Y1S has convinced us for its cleaning power. The declared rotations, even if impossible to verify them exactly, seem to us to be plausible, with a peak of power in the bleached mode, and a softer but always vigorous cleaning, even in the lightest mode.
The declared autonomy is unbeatable, which we have not verified 100%, given our week of use, easy to use in everyday life, with the head that does not require any particular setup: just push it in for correct use. The sales package is very generous, and overall it offers excellent value for money. The cartridges are not among the cheapest on the market, and cost € 9.99 in the pack of 2. We remind you, however, that the first two are included in the package.
At the time of writing, usmile Y1S is available on Amazon for € 64.99.
