After years, actually difficult for LG on the smartphone stage, with LG Velvet the company tries to redefine itself within this panorama, abandoning the G and V series. Let's see what it is.
First of all, let's start with the design and the display. The latter boasts a 6.8-inch diagonal with Full HD + 2,460 x 1,080 resolution, with an aspect ratio of 20.5: 9 and a P-OLED screen with a drop notch refresh rate of 60 Hz. The internal terminal it has dimensions of 167.2 x 74.1 x 7.9 mm with a well distributed weight of 180 grams, IP68 certification for water and dust resistance and optical screen fingerprint reader.
The design of the LG Velvet is probably its most important feature. For years, LG's flagships have remained mostly unchanged, and with LG Velvet the company seems to be reinventing itself. From the shape of the body to the camera array to the Velvet colors it signals something totally new to the brand. LG Velvet offers a truly minimalist back, covered in colored Gorilla Glass and with a new array of cameras. The cameras should represent a drop of water falling downwards, and this is the first element of novelty compared to other competitors. The camera design is really successful. LG has done a good job of using cameras of various sizes to create a design that is in fact unique on the market. 
On the front we find the same minimalism, with a truly impressive display, with a teardrop design, and rather thin bezels. It has a thickness of just 7.9 mm, which makes the device certainly a fashionable item. A not indifferent applause for the absolutely reduced thickness, also in consideration of the fact that the Velvet integrates a 4300 mAh battery. Moreover, in these thin frames there is no shortage of on and off key, volume rocker, but also a shortcut key thanks to which to start the voice assistant. 
In the upper part of the terminal there is the SIM card tray with microSD card expansion and in the part there is space for the USB-C port, a speaker and a headphone jack. Unfortunately, LG has decided not to include the quad DAC that is often found in its high-end phones. That said, LG includes a 3D sound engine that helps make music more full-bodied. 
As for the LG Velvet display, which really impressed us, it is a 6.8-inch P-OLED unit with an aspect ratio of 20.5: 9 and a resolution of 2,460 x 1,080. Really beautiful, with colors and rich. The sides of the display are curved, which helps the terminal to have a modern look, which almost makes the device even thinner than it already is. As already mentioned there is an optical fingerprint reader under the screen, which unfortunately fails to be among the fastest and most accurate ever. Unlocking, unfortunately, is one of the negative elements of the terminal, considering that there is not even the Face ID in any way. In short, the combination of touch ID not too reactive with the absence of the Face ID, sometimes makes the unlocking itself slow. 
Features technical
The performance of LG Velvet is entrusted to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, as well as 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM, with microSD support. Using the Snapdragon 765G instead of the more powerful 865 has, of course, disadvantages, but also advantages. First of all, it has a built-in 5G modem, which saves space and costs for the manufacturer. This helped LG keep the phone slim, while still covering the sub-6GHz 5G spectrum. Fortunately, the rest of the specs are higher-end.
The fact that it has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage makes it a definitely good terminal, although certainly not at the top. In daily use we have been able to appreciate fluidity in the passage from one app to another and, in general, in the use of any application. We have recorded some small micro lag in videogame sessions, even in games that are not too demanding, such as Clash Royale. It is certainly, rather than a lack of the terminal, a poor optimization. Furthermore, we have been able to see that this processor does not seem to like apps like DAZN, where the playback of streaming movies is not very fluid. 
When on autonomy, the 4,300 mAh battery does not work wonders, but it is absolutely average. It is a pity, however, that recharging is “extremely” slow. Attention, not slow in general, but slow compared to what the competition offers nowadays: the LG Velvet takes about two full hours to recharge, a much higher time than many other competitors that use super charging technologies. fast. The good thing is, however, that LG Velvet, unlike other terminals in the same price range, supports wireless charging. 
Camera
On the multimedia front, LG Velvet offers a 48MP main camera on the back with an f / 1.8 aperture, flanked by an 8MP wide-angle, f / 2.2, a depth sensor from 5 MP, f / 2.4 and a selfie sensor from 16 MP , f / 1.9 .
The overall impression is that LG Velvet takes good photos. Dynamic range is good, although the terminal tends to underexpose images. Beyond the brightness, the different sensors maintain a good color profile, similar between the various sensors.
Good photographic quality, but obviously nothing that can compare to the camera phones par excellence. The terminal allows you to zoom up to 10x, but it is advisable not to exploit this magnification under any circumstances, because the photos would be greatly affected. The selfie camera takes pretty good photos in any scenario, with the evenly illuminated.
Overall, the LG Velvet's camera system does its job, but it's far from being one of the best camera systems available on the market. It must be said, however, that for the price range at which it is found on the market today, it is not bad at all. 
As for the video, the Velvet can record up to a resolution of 4k. Again the overall quality is good, but not excellent.
Accessories
The accessory par excellence of this LG Velvet is certainly the Dual Screen. As the name suggests, it allows you to add a second screen to the main one, set in a book cover, which obviously increases the overall size, as well as the thickness, in a not indifferent way. 
It connects via the USB-C port, and it is really difficult to remove, especially in the first tests, when the fear is to break something, whenever you decide to unhook from the seat. 
Dual screen gives you the ability to run different apps on each screen, expand apps to fill both displays at the same time, or use the dual screen as a virtual keyboard or joypad for games. 
While it may be useful in some specific circumstances, in general it is not very useful. In everyday life we have not really found any use that would justify the purchase. Warning, the quality of the second display is good, but to be honest we decided not to use it much in our tests. Also because, it ruins the design of the terminal, which represents one of the strengths of LG Velvet. 
Conclusions
The Velvet is a particularly successful phone from a design point of view, which certainly lends freshness to the panorama. It is almost a fashionable accessory, and this makes LG certainly suitable for a more casual audience, but who seek outward beauty in their smartphone. It must be said that there is a lot of competition in this price range, and if on the one hand it is aesthetically difficult to find better at this price, from the point of view of technical characteristics something more could be done. Fortunately, the current street price makes it a more attractive terminal than the initial price list did.
