YEELIGHT YLCT03YL Pro Review: Homekit lamp with wireless charging

An absolute reliability test that we conducted with the Yeelight YLCT03YL Pro smart lamp with an unlikely name but with a linear look and extreme versatility that includes compatibility with Homekit many levels of lighting and last but not least a 10 Watt wireless charging pad. for compatible iPhones and smartphones.

We have installed it in the room instead of the previous more plasticky and less elegant models that we have reviewed here and that are part of the Xiaomi galaxy like Yeelight: you can find them both with the original brand and with the Mi or Mijia brand

The packaging and the aesthetics of the lamp

It is a white cardboard box in a style that is very “Apple” like the look of the lamp itself and with the Homekit compatibility mark prominently. Obviously the lamp also works with Android and with the direct iOS application that allows some additional options compared to Homekit but the direct connection with the domotic universe of cupertino makes it a strong point. The package indicates the programming options for switching on, delayed switching off, night light mode, 14 watt wireless fast charge with a maximum distance of 3.5 mm from the object and the ability to connect to your home automation installation via Wi.-Fi Wi -Fi IEEE 802.11b / g / n 2.4GHz.

The input request is 20Watts, the maximum light output is 350 Lumens (sufficient for a bedside lamp) and the color temperature ranges from 2700 to 6500 ° Kelvin, from the warmest to the coldest light. The color rendering index is Ra95.

The lamp has excellent finishes that seem to be stable over time (at least they were in the 6 months of direct testing): the only element that appreciably differs is the central gray charging pad in the support base which must be distinguishable at least to center. at night the right position for your phone in the dim light. The finish is white and slightly silky and is appreciated to the touch while the moving parts of the object are represented by the power button which is actually a multifunction key that can be adjusted by the lamp bell from zero to thirty degrees. The stem is painted in white

The light is emitted both downwards (prevailing lighting) and upwards for a pleasant presence effect (it is as if the bell were open at the bottom and at the top similar to a normal lampshade) always with the same color temperature (they are probably exploited the same LEDs). The upper diameter of the lampshade is 104 mm while the lower one is approximately 180 mm. The base has a diameter of approximately 165 mm and a total height of 295 mm.

To put it to work we have to connect the power supply included in the package to the coaxial socket located behind the stem (12V / 1.5 A power supply) (we received the one with the Chinese plug at the time but the European one that does not require an adapter should be available) .

When turned on we have a low brightness light and a warm white temperature which is what we would expect from an object without the smart capabilities of this Yeelight.

A large button

All direct operation on the lamp is carried out by a button that is not easily identifiable because it is flush with the base: probably Yeelight has decided to avoid accidental activations but it is not always found the first time at night and to activate particular functions it is not always possible to use the voice commands especially if you sleep with light sleepers.

  • To turn the lamp on or off, simply press the button and you get the last brightness and color temperature set when it was last turned off.
  • If you want to adjust the color temperature, you need to long press it.
  • If the lamp has the lowest brightness setting (Moon), long press will gradually increase the brightness of the lamp, before switching to cool white, it will eventually reach 100% brightness.
  • If the lamp has the setting of highest brightness (Sun) long press will first switch to warm white at 100% brightness, then gradually reduce the brightness to the lowest level, set to warm white.
  • If the lamp is set to Moon mode, whatever the brightness level, long press the button automatically switches to Sun mode.
  • Double pressing the button will activate the delayed shutdown status. The light will then turn off after a fixed period of time, which is 10 minutes. You can use a different timing in the Yeelight app or a different automation with Homekit.

Thanks to the QI charging pad it is possible to recharge iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X / XR / XS / XS Max and iPhone 11/11 Pro / 11 Pro Max but also mobile phones such as Samsung and Huawei: thanks to a small built-in led we will find out if we have inserted it in the right position and if the LED flashes too quickly we will know if the phone is not compatible with the lamp charging system. Recharging takes place at about 5 Watts with the lamp off while it increases if the lamp is on and this is consistent with the normal ways of using the lamp itself that we remember, it can also be used on a desk and not simply next to a bed.

In fact, we can say that with an iPhone 11 Pro not completely discharged (10-20% of remaining battery), after 6-7 hours with the lamp off the phone is perfectly charged.

The apps and 'home automation integration

Depending on the iOS (and Mac) or Android environment in which we will use the lamp, we decide where to start with the inclusion of the lamp in our system, knowing that if we use Homekit the insertion will be very simple: just scan the specific code printed in the base and then we will see the lamp in the Home App and in all those compatible with the possibility of automating switching on, off, intensity, color temperature and activating voice commands.

Below are some screenshots of the Homekit configuration that allow you to control and adjust the lamp.

If we use the Yeelight or Mi Home app (and from here we can share everything with Homekit) we must add the new model by selecting it from the list of the App itself and in this case we will have additional functions such as the “Candle Flicker” effect, the simulation of the sunrise “Sunrise” and the “Flash Notify” and last but not least the “Moon” effect that reduces the light output to superminimum and allows you to keep the lamp on without a major impact on your sleep while it is able to reassure those who just can't sleep in the dark. Through Mi Home we will also be able to integrate the lamp with Alexa, Googe Assistant, SmartThings, IFTTT and other home automation platforms.

Below we see some screenshots of the Mi Home application and its control of the lamp denoted as “Yeelight Star LED Table Lamp”.

Unfortunately, as we said through Homekit and direct automations, you cannot go below 1% intensity while “Luna” seems to take advantage of a minimum part of the lamp's LEDs and offers absolutely no annoying light even for more photosensitive people.

    At work

In these 6 months the lamp has proved to be very comfortable: elegant, versatile, excellent for the range of warm lighting temperatures with which it was used and with the priceless utility of offering a wireless charging for the smartphone without taking up any more space on the bedside table than it usually also houses keys and glasses. Positioning the phone is very easy and the voice commands also help to manage the automations such as delayed timers or reduction of light intensity in progressive steps (even if it is not possible to recreate a sunset or sunrise effect with “Home”). For the other effects you have to use Mi Home or Yelight and this is not always convenient.

The button in the base is not easily identifiable immediately but then the lamp which is ultra-stable and non-slip will always be in the same position every night and morning and therefore you will easily take the right distances to find it.

However, it is convenient to insert it into our home automation system, whatever it is: with the classic “Goodnight Home” or “Turn off all lights” even our lamp will go to sleep while it charges our smartphone.

Another aspect that we like to underline is the duration of the finishes: when you “play” with different shades of white and different surface finishes and materials, it is easy for the color to undergo some “mutation” after a few months, making the product lose its elegance. . For this Yeelight nothing to report: the product, although cheap, has perfectly maintained the original colors.

    Conclusions

A beautiful studio or bedroom object that combines the convenience of a lamp with adjustable intensity and color temperature with a wireless charger that is super convenient at bedtime.

Some functions are unfortunately not available with home automation systems but make the lamp even more versatile and attractive.
