There are so many accessories that Xiaomi Mijia dedicates to the smart home and among the smallest and cheapest ever there is also the mini environmental thermometer, also with the function of hygrometer, which interfaces with the other smart devices of Xiaomi present in the house and allows even more automations. Here's how it works.
There are several models with similar functions, so we would like to point out right away that the environmental thermometer we tested is the LYWSD03MMC model. That simplicity is the basis of this small peripheral can be understood immediately from the sales package, really small and minimal. It is a small card containing the peripheral.
It is really small, just 4 cm per side, with a square shape and a negligible weight. It is made of white plastic, and the front is almost entirely formed by the LCD display, where the detected temperature and humidity level are always shown in plain sight, flanked by a stylized emoticon that shows the degree of comfort present in the environment.
The display, in relation to the total size of the device, is particularly large, even if the total dimensions of the device are really miniaturized. It is difficult to read if you are far away or in the dark, as it is not backlit. In daylight conditions, however, it is always readable from any angle, as long as you are close to it, or have good eyesight.
The thermometer works with a CR2032 button battery, which according to the manufacturer ensures a longevity of about 1 year: considering the small black and white display it is not hard to believe that the battery really lasts 1 year.
The operation of the thermometer is absolutely intuitive and does not require special precautions. If you want to use it without bluetooth or smart functions, simply place it in the desired environment, and read the data shown on the display.
If, on the other hand, you want to pair it with a smartphone, it will be sufficient to enable the Bluetooth of the device, open the Mi Home app, search for a new device and click on the thermometer that will appear on the screen.
The application, in addition to replicating the data on temperature and humidity on the screen, will also allow you to view the historical temperature recorded over time by the device. By pairing it with the smartphone it will be possible to check the values indicated on the small display on the terminal screen, making reading easier.
However, pairing the thermometer with the smartphone also has other advantages. The first is to be able to activate the monitor mode for newborns. In this case, whenever the temperature leaves the pre-established comfort zone, which from 0 to 3 years, is between 20 and 24 degrees, and between 45 and 70 percent humidity, the app will send a notification to the smartphone. .
Furthermore, the real strength of this thermometer is the ability to communicate with all the other Xiaomi devices in the house, therefore with lights, sensors, alarms, and more. In this way it will be possible to create routines.
For example, if the temperature drops below a certain threshold, you can choose to run a heat pump or turn on a light. It works with all other peripherals of the Xiaomi Mijia ecosystem, such as vacuum cleaners and other smart peripherals. It is clear that the main operation would be that with radiators or air conditioners, which, however, are not yet distributed in Italy.
Beyond the simplicity with which the peripheral works, and the extra features that are obtained by combining it with a smartphone, it is also good to say a few words on the accuracy and quality of the data provided.
The ambient thermometer offers, on paper, an accuracy of 0.1 degrees, and a humidity accuracy of 0.1 percent RH. We found, more easily with the temperature data, a perfect correspondence between what is shown on the display and the degrees actually present inside the room.
Moreover, the thermometer is really precise and sensitive, and it is enough for example to take it in your hand to see the temperature rise immediately. In short, it is a peripheral that costs a few euros, but which provides precision in the data provided. It's just a pity that the screen doesn't show the time as well. At that point he would have provided useful additional information.
