TomTom GO Premium X is the spearhead of TomTom's new line of car accessories driving aids, a brand that needs no introduction and is today synonymous with GPS navigator.
Many of the most important innovations of the new model (and of many models in the line) are less evident than it seems and go far beyond the excellent display, in an elegant, functional product that despite the price offers qualities that considerably detach it from Google Maps which today is the main competitor being available for free on all iOS and Android mobile phones on the market at the cost of a permanent internet connection.
TomTom GO Premium X, the review
The class is not water
The TomTom GO Premium X package arrived in the editorial office made us happy, because in a world where the navigator is often underestimated it is nice to see that those who have always done so still strongly believe in it.
The special edition we tested comes in a velvet box, with the actual navigator and all the accessories inside, which we will talk about later in this article.
In fact TomTom GO Premium X is not only the most beautiful navigator made by TomTom, but also the one that best shows off its qualities: the construction is in quality black plastic, with golden metal inserts that surround a large and excellent display. 6 ″ with WVGA resolution (480 × 800 pixels). The front part is given only by the display, while on the back there is the power button and the connectors for hooking to the dashboard or the windscreen, as well as the MicroUSB connector (useless here we will see why) for charging.
The display is protected by a thin, removable protective film and pleasure: the display size (6 ″) is very generous and we can say that, basically, it is the best for a non-integrated navigator, because going further would mean invalidating the visibility of the guide. for a result with no visible benefits.

Accessories, the secret ingredient
What you immediately notice in the examination of the TomTom GO Premium X is the large number of accessories in the package. In addition to the MicroUSB / USB-A cable, the box contains a leatherette case for transporting the navigator, a double USB charger for the car (although we like more to think of Nonda's ZUS) and the '' hook for the windshield or dashboard, on which we spend a few more words.
The new hook proposed by this model is really well done and probably the most important novelty of this model and of the new generation: once attached to the windshield, in fact, it offers magnetic connectors that hold the navigator in the correct position, feeding it thanks to a second connector MicroUSB on the back.

Once the navigator is removed from the windshield, gently and with one hand, the hook remains there alone, while the navigator can easily go in his bag or pocket.
The writer has used the Via 53 model for a couple of years, still very good albeit not at the level of the TomTom GO Premium X but whose most obvious differences are the larger display and the much, much more practical hook and that in fact solves one of the most felt problems of auxiliary navigators, the attachment and detachment of the navigator to the windscreen (for safety reasons).
How it works (offline)
Once we have examined the nature of the proposal, let's go to the part that matters most, how the TomTom GO Premium X works.
The navigator integrates a 16GB memory (expandable to 32GB via MicroSD) which allows it to store European maps and to operate independently even offline.

The display is full touch and very comfortable to use, very large and clearly visible both day and night: those who have always used a TomTom find themselves in a second, discovering the news one at a time in complete tranquility, those who have used others navigators only takes a second longer.
The graphics show the presence of buildings (with 3D representations) and geographical elements and the main indications of the road, with focus on the pivotal moments (such as the exit from the motorway). Color customization is limited but present and the transition from day to night is automatic.
In addition to the streets, the search also includes the names of some important commercial activities.
The Smart part
But it is when paired with a smartphone, via the TomTom MyDrive App that many of the qualities emerge: all current TomTom models have lifetime free map updates, via integrated Wi-Fi, and thanks to the smartphone's data connection also real-time traffic management (which is taken into account for the calculation of the road) but this one in particular also offers Lifetime Speed Camera detection (about 30 Euros per year for the cheapest models).
The App itself offers a series of functions that integrate with those of the navigator in an optimal way: for example, it is possible to set the road from the smartphone, which at this point can also use the information in the contacts (as well as the copy and paste from the other Apps), although unfortunately it does not appear in the Sharing Apps (very useful function to switch from Google Maps or Maps to TomTom MyDrive).
Also interesting is the Road Trips function, which offers interesting and scenic routes in the most beautiful areas of Europe, with constant updates, to be done instead of the fastest road between two points or compatibility with IFTTT, for those who love automation and integration thicker.
The App serves the navigator very well, but this is its greatest merit and also the greatest limitation: the App is in fact an extension of the navigator, when it could have been in command.
For example, we would have liked to be able to adjust some parameters of the navigator directly from the App, as well as to be able to obtain some data present on the navigator, which the App does not collect and finally, once the road has been set and communicated, this becomes a mere bridge for connect, when a second display could do much more.
The TomTom My Drive web page, which allows some functions offered by the App from Mac and PC. We use it to more easily manage some details, such as favorites
The sense of TomTom
During the test, we involved some friends to get different opinions and some of them were perplexed in the use of a navigator, when Apple Maps and Google Maps for iPhone or Android are available today, free and updated in real time.
The question is complex and certainly here has a lot to do with the habit and the “value” that you give to a satellite navigator according to your driving needs.
What we can say is that the use of this navigator was really convenient for us and we will find it hard to return it, because we travel a lot for work and such a device becomes an integral part of the trip.
While driving our iPhone used to handle music and calls and literally the display has no time to always show the way, which the TomTom GO Premium X does its job, even if it does something else as well.
The navigator is even larger than the display of our iPhone 8 and has a second battery: the problem of the data limit in mobility is now almost gone, but in any case offline navigation is always convenient, especially abroad.
Not that a smartphone like the iPhone 11 Pro cannot be considered an alternative, but because a navigator does his job better, because he was born for that.
That said, the TomTom GO Premium X actively communicates with the smartphone, alerting if messages or WhatsApp arrive and reading them, it can use an integrated voice assistant and also function as a hands-free for the phone, in case the car does not have one.
Considerations
As users of a TomTom Via 53 that is just two years old, we liked this TomTom GO Premium X very much, because it is extremely comfortable in all functions, it is safe and precise and accompanies the driver like a butler, professional and efficient quiet.
The App does what it needs to do, with many improvements ahead but at the moment already efficient for what it is designed for (and who knows, maybe deliberately limited by TomTom to prevent it from becoming an internal competitor).
The cost is high, we admit it, but we are talking about the flagship model of the proposal and a full optional of accessories and services, which you get used to in a flash.
If you drive little and occasionally it is practically a whim, if you do it more often and for long distances it is an interesting option that you should think about, without falling too much into clichés, if you do it for work, TomTom GO Premium X offers you a hand important to optimize travel times and increase safety from all points of view.
