Toshiba Canvio Ready is a mechanical disk from Toshiba's affordable line available in 500GB sizes, growing up to the latest, from 4TB, all in USB 3.0 on USB-A connector.
Impossible not to notice that the size of 4 TB, typical of this test, offers crazy portability just thinking about a few years ago, where 4 TB of data are now considered as a value of a small home or small office NAS, while here they are. comfortably in your pocket.

The package, ultra protected
Online purchases are now more and more widespread and Toshiba is careful with simple packaging, where however there is an additional inflatable nylon protection inside, useful for accidental falls, not a new factor in home deliveries.
Once the protection is discarded, the actual disk and a USB-A / USB3.0 cable emerge. Toshiba Canvio Ready is just a black plastic surface, with a pattern at the top and the connector at the back. The only color note is a small blue LED placed in a corner that identifies the activity.
The dimensions for the 4TB drive are 119 × 80 × 21.5 mm (weighing 236g), identical for the 2 and 3TB drives, while for the 500GB and 1TB drives the appearance is slimmer with dimensions of 119 × 80 × 15 mm (with weight of 176 g).

Preparation
The disk comes in NTFS format, a typical Windows format, which macOS can only use for reading. Once we took the two PDF files inside (the instruction manual and the PDF for the warranty) we proceeded to initialize the disk in a format more suitable for the Mac, opting for HFS +, since the APFS would have been almost useless ( but somewhat limiting on older Macs) on a mechanical drive. If we wanted, we could also have used the ExFAT format, readable by both Mac and Windows, but with lower performance
Once initialized, we immediately tried it as an iMac backup disk, using DejaVu as software to produce an exact copy of our archive, thus being able to use all the files even on the move for a three-day trip.

Yes, because today connections are faster and faster with ever more capable cloud systems, but to move more than a few GB of data a physical connection is still the best way (especially since we can use it even without a connection).
The access speed to the Toshiba Canvio Ready is good for a mechanical disk via USB 3.0, a technology that has now reached an extreme maturity, with speed that can only be overcome by double equipment in RAID0, but offering greater risk and operational fragility on the move.
