Kenwood DVR – 830 is a Dashcam, an intelligent camera capable of monitoring and recording parts of the journey while driving. Here at Cyberlayman we have recently dealt with Dashcam, and we invite readers to read the article because there are some interesting tips on the basic qualities that this type of device must have.
Today, however, we are talking in detail about the Kenwood model, an important name that bursts into a sector that is certainly growing that can become a fundamental aid for those who drive a lot in the event of disputes (as well as a valid help in some situations when driving, as we will see). .
Kenwood DVR – 830, the review
Out of the box
The Dashcam comes in a box complete with power cable (there are no batteries inside) with proprietary connector on one side and cigarette lighter on the other. Our first doubts rested on this point because from our point of view a USB connector would have been more versatile and would have made the initial operations easier, in particular due to the fact that in this case we had to give up the ZUS, one of the our favorite accessories in the car (and also on the navigator).
The power cable, with a not very smart connector: it is clear that once positioned in the car, especially if in a static way, everything works and is not noticed, however in the initial phases USB connector is more convenient.
For the rest, the Dashcam has a traditional shape, very close to that of a sportcam, with a large display on the rear and a front lens, in addition to the upper attachment (which remains attached to the glass, the attachment is a hook.
On the one hand the two slots for the SD cards peek out, on the other the buttons for navigating the menus (no touchscreen).
The Dashcam is small and if you don't trust to leave it in the car it fits well in your pocket or purse, thanks to the rounded corners.

Ready go
That said, ready off we searched and found a Micro SD SDXC / SDHC (a model like this one) to fit inside the two slots, which support up to 128GB each, and once in the car, we started the engine.
The ignition is instantaneous and very fast: in a few seconds the CAM is ready for use and attentive to what is happening around.

The 3-inch 2K (2560 × 1440) camera with 144 ° wide angle lens and HDR allows you to see an optimal field of view and honestly much wider than the driver's, particularly if the cam is correctly positioned in the front glass.
In particular, shooting with HDR is particularly attentive to the balance of light and dark areas, increasing the recovery of detail.
A short excursion through the menus allowed us to check the first options and as a test we made the Kenwood DVR-830 quite sensitive to everything, which allowed us to understand its characteristics without, for this, having to cause an accident. , excessive factor for a review.
The integrated 3-axis G-sensor reacts to shocks by activating the recording automatically (the user can define its duration), although obviously it is possible to activate the manual recording using the appropriate button at the bottom.
The system warns us in case of anomalous situations with an acoustic warning, immediately activating the recording: shocks, unexpected lane changes, sudden braking, things that we have been able to see in person, even if the lane change did not give the desired results.
The assisted parking function is also interesting, which warns us if, when stationary, an obstacle passes in front of the camera (according to Repubblica.it, for example, most of the accidents occur in parking lots, probably due to little attention).
For insurance
Once the engine is turned off and the memory card has been removed, it can be read from the Mac in various ways (even with an adapter): the videos are recorded in MOV format that can be natively read by QuickTime, and can be avoided freely with your favorite software, but from the site Kenwood it is possible to download the App for Mac and Windows Drive reviewer which, once a folder is located, shows the list of videos and photos in association with the data relating to the sensors and GPS (in practice the most complete and rich situation possible.
The Drive reviewer software, also for Mac, which allows the analysis of the recorded tracks and photos, with sensor data, speed and GPS position
Considerations
The Dashcam are not accessories for everyone, but those who work and often work in cars should seriously consider one: it is a bit like an insurance, hopefully never needed, however at the first opportunity the effort pays off big, because having irrefutable proof of what happened may be the key to a dispute worth several thousand euros.
Kenwood DVR-830 is a beautiful object, certainly the price is high considering the competition but the quality is not lacking, and for those who want valid and proven hardware support, a strong brand behind them and above all a software capable of detecting and offering all , but all the data available, there are few alternatives.
Pro : • Elegant shape, ready to use • Excellent mechanics, high degree of customization of the controls • The software for Mac is a valid help
Versus: • The power cord is cracked and a USB alternative is missing • High price
Price : 199 , 99 Euro (plus KENWOOD CA-DR100 for direct connection to the car battery, at a cost of 19.90 Euro, optional)
