OnePlus 5T review, is it the perfect Android smartphone?

OnePlus 5T review, is it the perfect Android smartphone?

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,,

After a few years of presence on the market in recent months it has managed to pierce the Android smartphone segment, entering through the main door. We are talking, of course, of OnePlus, which after having churned out the excellent OnePlus 5, has decided to attack the market even more with OnePlus 5T, to counter the growing fashion of “full-screen” devices, with an 18: 9 ratio. Cyber Layman has tested it and the question in the title already suggests the level of this terminal.

    Aesthetics

We assume that all the current top of the range on the market, those that mount the Snapdragon 835 processor, offer high performance, with smartphones that cannot be more fluid and responsive. Of course, OnePlus 5T also enters this segment, and the game that allows you to choose one or the other terminal is really played on the details. On an aesthetic level, OnePlus 5T does not choose the extreme optimizations of a Xiaomi Mi Mix, but it looks more like an LG V30.

What immediately catches the eye is the very low thickness, equal to 7.2 mm. Even the weight, considering that it is a 6.01-inch diagonal smartphone, is absolutely surprising: 162 grams. And then, if it is true that finding an original smartphone is practically impossible nowadays, it is equally true that these harsh characteristics make OnePlus 5T an absolutely valuable terminal, which returns an absolutely pleasant feeling, from the first time you take it. in hand.

Among the aesthetic details that make OnePlus 5T different from many others is the presence of a triple stroke physical button, located on the left edge, which allows you to silence the terminal, or quickly enter the do not disturb mode. In short, it is an evolution of the classic Apple Mute button, which for unknown reasons does not find space on many terminals today, but which turns out to be particularly convenient, especially in working environments.

the same side is the volume rocker, while on the opposite frame there is space for the power button and the trolley for the double SIM, without it being possible to insert MicroSD to expand the memory. On the bottom USB-C input, which thanks to the supplied cable and Dash wall socket offers the fastest charging in the entire smartphone landscape.

    Display

Believe it or not, the writer does not particularly like AMOLED display. Although the list of positive features offered by this technology, considered in many respects superior to the LCD one, is really long, there is no lack of negative sides, such as the colors that change from the different angles from which you look at the display. Nevertheless, the 6.01-inch Optic Amoled unit mounted by the OnePlus 5T is among the best appreciable in a smartphone.

The colors do not veer in the least, they are very vivid and at the same time natural, they offer perfect blacks, but at the same time also really fine whites. The display reads well in any light condition, enjoys numerous calibration options, which allow you to obtain the desired colors. Not to mention the two different night viewing and reading modes, which tend to strain the eyes as little as possible in the darkest hours and when using the terminal for reading.

Again, among the software settings there is the possibility to switch between light and dark theme: the latter perfectly marries the AMOLED technology, but also the light theme is absolutely flawless, due to the excellent whites of the display. In short, OnePlus 5T also stands out for an excellent display, among the best in the category.

    Features technical

Talking about the technical characteristics is almost superfluous. As already mentioned, the technical data sheet is typical of the top of the range, with the consequence that the performance is typical of a top of the range. Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835, then Octa-core CPU (4 × 2.45 GHz Kryo & 4 × 1.9 GHz Kryo), Adreno 540 GPU and 6 GB of RAM in the version we tested, are enough to recite the usual script in which everything runs at wonder, in an absolutely fluid way, without the slightest uncertainty.

The transition from one app to another is immediate, the operating system runs in the best way, also thanks to the UI Oxygen, among the best available on the market, because it manages to maintain a practically stock interface, with small customizations that make the difference, which we will return to shortly.

    recensione oneplus 5t

On the back there is the fingerprint sensor, moved to this position to make room for the large display on the front, so as to being able to optimize the frames: the lateral ones are practically absent, the lower and upper ones are reduced. Here is the 16 MP front chamber, in addition to the ear capsule. Too bad for the mono system speaker: OnePlus could have opted for a solution similar to that of Xiaomi, where the ear capsule works together with the main one to offer a sort of stereo effect. In any case, the audio that comes out from the speaker at the bottom is full-bodied, precise, without smudging, with warm and enveloping tones.

    Face unlock

The OnePlus 5T face unlock deserves a separate discussion. Without the possibility of error, we believe we can say that it is the fastest currently available on the market. Yes, far faster than that available on the iPhone X. The terminal does not have an advanced system like Apple's Face ID, but in everyday use it seems to be absolutely precise and flawless. When you unlock it with your face, you do not pass even for a moment from the lock screen: pressing the standby key will directly access the home screen with the icons.

recensione oneplus 5t recensione oneplus 5t recensione oneplus 5t

It is able to recognize the user even with glasses and hats, and is able to accurately recognize when the user has his eyes open or closed (in the latter case it does not unlock the terminal). Beware, however, the system does not work in the dark. This is the flaw that makes the OnePlus 5T unlocking not usable at 100%.

In a dark room you can unlock the terminal, for example, if the face is illuminated even by a small source of light, such as the screen of a PC or a notebook, but when you are enveloped in darkness OnePlus 5T will not be unlocked in any case by the face, except to set the display brightness to maximum, so that the face is illuminated directly from the smartphone.

    recensione oneplus 5t

In any case it is a feature that can be used almost as a main unlocking system, precisely because of its accuracy and reliability, with the awareness of having to use the Touch ID at night. Moreover, even the fingerprint sensor is among the fastest and most precise available on the market, probably second only to the top of the Huawei range.

On the security of the release we can only be satisfied: we tried to deceive him with photos, without succeeding in any case. Certainly it cannot be compared to Apple's Face ID for security, but in everyday use it is constantly surprising. Really amazing.

    recensione oneplus 5t

Face unlock is so fast it has its downsides too. Think, for example, if you are listening to music on Spotify or Play Music, or even if you are watching a movie on Netflix or similar services. In these cases, the unlock screen offers quick buttons for controlling the music or the film: it is a pity that the face unlock, as already mentioned, is so fast as to skip the lock screen, and therefore does not allow you to manage music and movies in playback with shortcuts on the lockscreen. To avoid this inconvenience it is possible, from the Settings, to make the OnePlus 5T unlock behave like that of the iPhone X: after recognizing the face, a swipe is still necessary to access the Home.

    Software

OnePlus seems to have understood that software is an important pawn to support hardware. The Oxygen UI is among the Android interfaces to be preferred. On the one hand it returns the stock experience, which doesn't hurt, but on the other hand it adds very small customizations that make the terminal absolutely efficient. For example, you can insert widgets, quick contacts and other features into a sort of assistant to be invoked with a swipe from left to right. The system launcher allows, without being in any way heavy, to change layouts, modify icons, and access quick functions for each app as on the Pixel.

As already mentioned, there are many possibilities to customize the colors of the display, the favorite theme (light, dark), to modify the icons of the status bar , like that of the battery, to insert custom gestures. In short, an Android stock in which small gems are grafted, which usually an Android user is forced to search for in alternative launchers. Small, big flaw is the absence of a one-handed mode of use. If Xiaomi and Huawei have made it a real philosophy, one slide being enough to reduce the entire UI, so that you can use it with one hand, OnePlus seems to have forgotten about it.

Among the other goodies of the software the ambient display, which wakes up the screen when each notification is received, showing a preview of the messages. Again, by lifting the display from the desk you can read the time and check for notifications via white icons set against a black background (in the latter case the phone will not be unlocked by the face).

    Room

Also in this case we start from the technical characteristics, i.e. from that sequence of numbers that serve more to describe an indicative picture, than the real ones potential. On the rear there is a double camera, with a first sensor Sony IMX 398 1 / 2.8 “from 16MP, F1.7, and a second from 20 MP, Sony IMX 376K 1 / 2.78”, F1.7. The camera has a double flash, capable of recording 4K video at 30 fps, or 720p at 120 fps, with fast or manual shooting modes and Raw capture. The front camera is 16MP with F 2.0 aperture. But how do the photos look like?

    recensione oneplus 5t

In optimal light conditions OnePlus 5T captures pleasant images, with vivid and natural colors at the same time. Auto HDR activates for high-contrast scenes, ensuring appreciable dynamic range and good detail. The sharpness of the photos is good. When shooting against the light, 5T in some cases returns portions of the subject in the foreground a bit dark, and although some detail is lost on the elements in the background, the result is pleasant.

In conditions low light always ready to activate the secondary sensor. The camera app does not show when one or the other sensor is working, but a look at the EXIF data reveals that images taken in very low light have a resolution of 20MP, unlike those taken at 16MP with the main camera.

1 of 9 Low artificial light Artificial light Indoors with good light In the dark Dim artificial light Indoor Good light Good light Good light

Overall the OnePlus 5T camera is good, and the photos are satisfactory in all conditions. Portrait mode is also appreciable, but in this case there is still something to improve. The gap between the foreground subject and the background is good, but there is still some very small inaccuracy around the framed subject. Obviously these are “quibbles” to which we cling in the review, but in everyday use the bokeh is appreciable, even if not at the levels, for example, of a high-end Huawei.

As usual we propose a gallery of photos taken with the terminal, without any post production changes.

    Battery

The battery is 3300 mAh and even in this case the numbers say little of actual. In daily use, you arrive safely in the evening, even with intense use and with some percentage of residual battery. Even more so if you take advantage of the black theme. However, what makes OnePlus 5T a terminal from 10 and praise even in the battery field is the charging speed. Using Dash technology and the original equipment included in the sales pack, in just 30 minutes you can recharge almost 60%. The footage below doesn't lie, and even our tests returned very similar results.

    Conclusions

The perfect smartphone does not exist, but OnePlus 5T, always net of the subjective preferences of each, is really close. The face unlock is impressive, the thickness and weight of the terminal surprising, as well as the overall dimensions, considering a huge display of 6.01 inches. Dash fast charging is a feature you won't be able to do without. In short, many, many positive notes of this terminal. Even the price, if you consider that on GearBest you buy it at 470 euros, if not less. this is half that of many other top-of-the-range competitors, which certainly are not superior to this OnePlus device. Surprising.
