When we talk about Mi Mix we refer to a series of Xiaomi terminals sui generis, which has always tried to innovate, proposing futuristic concepts. If with the first Mi Mix Xiaomi had really upset the concept of a smartphone, with Mi Mix 2, and after 2s, it was back on a slightly more conventional road, while continuing to amaze due to absolutely reduced frames.
With this Mi Mix 3 the Chinese company has chosen to go back to innovating again, trying in some way to solve the age-old problem that every manufacturer has to face in the creation of a premium device, that is the cumbersome presence of the infamous notch .
The Mi Mix 3 certainly does it in an original way but not without flaws. Here are all the pros and cons of this device.
Unboxing
To be rewarded, without reservations, the contents of the package. In addition to the terminal, Xiaomi puts inside a well-made protective cover, and a wireless charging pad. Already, the user will not have to spend another 30 or 40 euros to buy one.
Considering that Mi Mix 3 enjoys support for Qi charging, it is an accessory, if not essential, however, particularly enjoyable. Headphones are missing, but there is still a USB-C headphone jack adapter.
The latter is an essential accessory considering that the terminal does not have the classic 3.5 mm input. The package also includes the battery charger and the USB-C cable: attention, it is a rather small cable in the connector, which allows the terminal to “slip” even under charge. With other USB-C cables, the plastic in the connector may affect the slide mechanism.
Aesthetics
An aesthetic level is certainly among the most beautiful terminals, clean 157.9 x 74.7 x 8.5 mm for 218 grams. Yes, it is not a discrete terminal from a dimensional point of view, and even the pocket makes you feel all its weight. Aesthetically, however, it is a real joy for the eyes, even more so when you turn on the panel, and you realize that the frames are now a distant memory of the past.
The back is always in ceramic, shiny, and with fingerprints ready to always be clearly visible at the slightest touch. The classic fingerprint sensor is present on the back, which, as we will see in succession, avoids having to open the slide continuously for any facial release. The double room, on the other hand, really seems to recall that of the iPhone X, arranged vertically in the upper left corner.
Very nice, not only for the size, but also for the quality, the display of this Mi Mix 3: finally a 6.39-inch AMOLED unit, with FullHD + 1080 x 2340 resolution and 19.5 aspect ratio: 9.
The display is among the best that Xiaomi has mounted on its own smartphone, bright, always readable, even in direct sunlight, and with a thousand customizations and calibrations, which will allow the user to find the solution that best suits their tastes. It is interesting to note that, in addition to the convenient reading mode, there is also the one in grayscale, which at night does not tire the eyes a little.
Note that in addition to the classic power buttons and volume rocker, there is also a button to call up the virtual assistant. Really handy, but only if you install a global version of the firmware.
Technical features
It goes without saying that the terminal is among the smoothest in the entire panorama. In subdued opinion of the writer it is a fluidity comparable to that of OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T, and MIUI is among the fastest graphic interfaces that best marry the concept of minimalism of the modern era. The data sheet speaks for itself, and it is useless to list here that it is, at the moment, a top of the range terminal.
The processor is the Snapdragon 845, 4x 2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold + 4x 1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver, with Adreno 630, and 6 or 8 GB RAM depending on the version chosen, with a storage of 128 or 256 GB.
In everyday life there is not the slightest lag, and the system is absolutely fluid in the passage from one app to another, in the opening of multitasking, web pages, in viewing multimedia content, in taking photos: Mi Mix 3 is simply lightning.

The slide
If from a technical and aesthetic point of view there is nothing to object to, except for dimensions and weight that are not too low, the most important innovation is also the one that could represent a cross and delight of the terminal. Let's start by saying that, in our opinion, the solution adopted by Xiaomi is still valid, but it may not represent the future, which seems to move towards displays with “holes” for the front cameras.
The rooms front are in fact hidden below the display, to be shown by sliding the panel down. The manual release of the sled is quite hard and dry, but also strong and solid. It is not very easy to carry out, especially because the terminal is particularly slippery.
It is difficult, with just one hand, to keep a firm grip and take the shot: the ceramic back is slippery, the finger slides on the display without a particular grip (this is good in daily use), and for this reason it is sometimes difficult to “open” the terminal. Surely, the solution used by Oppo Find X, with a mechanized sled, turns out to be more comfortable (but probably more delicate).
Fortunately, it will not be necessary to open the slide every time the terminal is used. Indeed, this operation will be necessary almost exclusively to take selfies or use the front camera, therefore during video calls.
This is because there is a fingerprint sensor on the back, which is among the fastest, responsive and accurate in circulation. The face unlock, which is present in the 2D variant, works well enough, but requires the slide to be opened. In short, with the presence of the Touch ID on the back, Xiaomi wanted to leave the user the freedom to use the terminal without necessarily having to activate the slide.
Cameras
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has four cameras, two on the back and two on the front. The rear camera has a Sony IMX363 12MP image sensor with 1.4μm pixels and autofocus. The lens has an aperture of f / 1.8 and with optical image stabilization. The other module has a 2x telephoto lens and uses a 12MP sensor with 1.0μm pixels. On the front an impressive 24 + 2MP configuration.
This time Xiaomi managed to amaze us with regard to the camera department, also in consideration of the support for artificial intelligence. Mi Mix 3's AI works really well. On numerous occasions the shots through automatic scene recognition seemed to us better than the counterparts taken without the AI filter.
In general, the photos are rich in detail, tend to enhance colors, and can capture many details. We have noticed a clear improvement compared to the direct predecessor also in the night shots, with appreciable shots, with a reduced background noise, and with clearly visible details.
Very nice software that offers many shooting options, such as photos with studio effect. Of course, there is also the possibility of taking Portrait photos, with an appreciable bokeh effect. We leave you with a gallery of photos taken with the terminal, without the application of filters and post production effects.
A praise also to the possibility of recording slow motion up to 960FPS. The result is incredible. You can get 1080p footage at 240fps with no time limit, while slow-mo at 960fps is limited to clips of a few seconds. As for standard video recording, you get to 4K at 60 fps.
The selfie camera is also a significant improvement over the Mi Mix 2S. The dual camera does its job, thanks to the 0.9μm pixel size for the main camera, and 4-in-1 pixel binning support. Also in this case, the selfie camera allows you to take portraits with background blur, thanks to the 2MP depth sensor.
Software
When it comes to Xiaomi, with rare exceptions, software customization is entrusted to MIUI. It is one of the most minimal and appreciable. It has already been said about the speed of the software, but it is also necessary to take into account the differences between the different editions, global or Chinese.
In Italy Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will be released on January 9th, while at now you can buy it in its Chinese variant. Even after the global release, the Chinese version will remain among the most popular, because it will allow you to save a lot on the list price.
It should be noted, however, that they have already been global and multilingual versions have been released: in short, it is easily possible to transform a Chinese Mi Mix 3 into a global one, with Italian language and perfectly functioning Google services. The unblocking procedure is not particularly difficult, but neither is it immediate, because first of all it requires a minimum waiting time of 72 hours.
The style gestures are excellent as always iPhone X to navigate the UI: together with OnePlus, Xiaomi is the manufacturer that best of all has implemented them on Android terminals. Super responsive and fluid, they have now become truly an integral part of the daily use experience of a terminal with Android system.
We postpone any consideration on autonomy, since the official Global version does not yet exist. of the terminal. At the moment, with the various multilingual ROMs available on the net, we get to cover the classic day of intense use.
Audio
There is a small detail that deserves attention: the audio department. With Mi Mix 2 Xiaomi had really done bingo, considering that the speaker on the bottom was accompanied by an ear capsule capable of simulating the stereo effect.
It worked particularly well, and for this reason it was desirable that the same experience was also replicated on Mi Mix 3: this is not the case, the audio is mono and no sound comes out of the ear capsule when playing multimedia content. Could it be a bug related to unofficial global software? Anyway the volume is absolutely satisfactory, but the audio is only mono.
Conclusions
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is, net of size and weight, one of the most beautiful smartphones from an aesthetic point of view. The sled system may not please everyone, but in the end it is intelligent: it can only be used for selfies and video calls.
Top performance and a really interesting photographic department, this time able to stand up to comparison with other top of the range. The price is also particularly interesting, considering that on GearBest it costs less than 500 euros.
