Oukitel WP5000 review, the most robust mid range there is

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,, Oukitel will certainly not be known for its top-of-the-range smartphones, but it is one of the protagonists of the most important smartphone scene when it comes to rugged phones. We at Cyber Layman have had the opportunity to test different proceeds, such as the K10000 Pro, terminal with an abnormal battery and massive design. The manufacturer tries again with Oukitel WP5000, a practically indestructible smartphone.

Let's start from the specifications, even if to tell the truth they do not represent the reason for choosing such a terminal. Not that they are insufficient, on the contrary, but these features can certainly be found in more traditional smartphones. The element that distinguishes Oukitel WP5000, as we will see later, is the design and its planning.

    Battery and power

In terms of specifications, the strengths of WP5000 are, first of all, the 5,200mAh battery and IP68 certification, which makes the terminal practically indestructible and usable in any condition, even in water. This is thanks to its construction in metal, rubber, and plastic frames. On the lower part it mounts a USB-C port with fast charge, which supports 9V / 2A (it recharges completely in just over two hours), and allows you to serve the user for 2 consecutive days, or even more in case of standby prolonged. Pay attention to the USB-C cables used: as in other Oukitel models it will be impossible to use third-party cables: not because they use different technologies, but simply because the Oukitel connector is placed in depth with respect to the surrounding cover, so the neck of the connector must be longer than usual, otherwise he won't be able to stay as he should.

    CPU

Inside, an octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 processor clocked at 2.5 GHz, supported by 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable memory. The extra space is obtained by sacrificing a SIM: therefore it can be used in Dual SIM mode (both 4G enabled), or in single SIM mode with MicroSD expansion. All hardware is run by Android 7.1 Nougat. Among other features, which make it suitable for all types of activities, even the most extreme ones, support for Bluetooth 4.2, but above all GLONASS and GPS, as well as a digital compass.

    Display

Although it is a rugged phone, which should put aesthetics in the background, this Oukitel WP5000 gives way to the fashion of elongated displays, now typical of any top of the range. In fact, it mounts a 5.7-inch panel with an 18: 9 ratio and a resolution of 1440 x 720. Also on the front is the 8MP front camera, which offers facial recognition functionality.

    Sensors

Among the many sensors enjoyed by the terminal, the terrestrial magnetic one, gyroscope, gravity sensor, and those of proximity and light sensors. Turning the terminal around, a fingerprint reader is placed on the back of the phone, located just below the dual-camera configuration. The sensors are 16 and 5MP, both wrapped in an additional metal mask for total protection. The sensors also feature a technology that Oukitel calls “anti-shake”, while a single rear speaker nestled in the lower rear completes the feature circle.

    Package contents

When you open the sales package, you immediately realize that there is something different from the usual. In addition to the terminal, the charging cable and the wall socket, and the classic pin to extract the SIM compartment, there is also a tool that is used to easily open the door that protects the housing of the two SIMs. There is also a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter, as this is natively lacking. There is also a second adapter, USB-C to standard USB, to take advantage of the OTG functionality of the terminal, which is therefore able to read files from a common external memory.

Oddly enough, a protective case is missing, which instead we had found in all the previously tested terminals of the brand. Evidently, WP5000 is so resistant that it does not necessarily need to be protected by a second silicone case, which would increase its thickness, which is already important in its own right. In fact, taking the terminal in hand you feel a feeling of extreme robustness.

Attention also to the pin for removing the SIM: at the opposite end of the pin the instrument has a hooked metal part, which is used to remove the SIM compartment, which remains housed inside even after using the traditional pin for the 'extraction.

    Design

In terms of design, the Oukitel WP5000 is what is expected of a rugged phone. It is a massive phone, aesthetically not minimal, which is almost frightening to the eye. Nonetheless, it holds well in the hand and, as more often anticipated, returns a feeling of extreme robustness. The look is absolutely aggressive, also due to the numerous visible screws, and a completely brushed metal frame.

Added to the rugged design are features such as IP68 certification, which provides waterproof and dust resistance, as well as impact protection from falls. Oukitel promises resistance up to a depth of 1.50 meters for up to half an hour.

The SIM port is well protected by a metal flap, which requires a plastic tool included in the package to open, while the USB-C connector is protected by a rubber door. In any case, despite being a full-blown rugged phone, the terminal feels a bit slimmer than the other smartphones belonging to the category. Slim, of course, as far as possible: it measures 81.9 x 168.8 x 13.9 mm, with a weight of 276 grams.

    Daily use

Beyond the data sheet above, the terminal moves well in everyday life. The Helio P25 processor is certainly not a top-of-the-range chipset, but it manages to run almost the entire Android ecosystem smoothly and quickly, also thanks to the 6GB of RAM side by side, which guarantee an excellent multitasking experience. You surf the net well, with rather fluid scrolling on any site, you take full advantage of all the main Android applications of productivity, messaging and even in less demanding games you can easily have a more than acceptable experience. In titles that require a particular graphic effort you will have to deal with some lag, but obviously it is a terminal, which after all, is not optimized for gaming.

A few words also deserve fingerprint sensor and face unlock. Both work about 7 times out of 10, which is still good in the mid-range. Particularly interesting is the Face ID, which usually fails completely on terminals of this range. Here it is usable, obviously not very fast, and not 100% accurate. We noticed, however, that the sensor works, albeit after a few seconds, even in water: with the smartphone completely immersed, it was able to unlock simply via facial recognition.

    Audio department

The audio quality is sufficient. The sound emanates from a single speaker placed on the back of the body, with a fairly high volume. Mid and bass tones give way to high tones, which are a favorite in playback, resulting in a somewhat tinny listening experience in some circumstances. On the other hand, the audio during conversations is good, even those via the VoIP app.

Unfortunately, there is no NFC, while the bands supported by the terminal are the following:

  • 2G (GSM): 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz
  • 3G (WCDMA): 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 2100 MHz
  • 4G FDD-LTE: bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20
  • With the Wind operator we had no problems in receiving the signal, we always surfed in 4G and the reception was excellent for the whole test period, moving between city areas and other seaside areas.

    Room

Cameras on mid-range devices hardly impress positively, because they are limited by dated hardware and an absolute lack of software optimization. On the WP5000 the shots are mediocre, with software familiar to anyone who has used the stock cameras of any other Android smartphone. The rear 16 and 5 megapixel sensors offer a certainly good shutter speed. In optimal light conditions the photos enjoy good detail and natural colors, however lively and well reproduced. When shooting in less light, however, the shot seems to fail to capture bright colors, and the shot is duller.

The Bokeh effect generated by the camera thanks to the Blur option is not the best, and is perceived as a purely software mode, and not hardware: the result of the blur effect, in short, seems almost totally deriving from the software and not from the presence of a dual camera. The autofocus is not perfect, and in some cases it will be necessary to force your hand a little, with repeated touches on the screen, to avoid blurry photos. In short, an overall mediocre camera department, which does not stand out from all the other mid-range smartphones. Below is a photo gallery that gives an idea of how you take pictures of this Oukitel WP 5000.

    Conclusions

Oukitel WP5000 is the ideal smartphone for those looking for a sturdy, practically indestructible terminal, suitable for extreme activities. There is no need to worry if you use it with wet hands, if it falls into water, sand, or earth. In everyday life it is used well and the terminal is fluid on almost all occasions. It offers excellent autonomy thanks to the 5200 mAh battery. It certainly fails in the photographic department, where it does not excel. If you accept such a non-minimal design, WP5000 does its duty in the most extreme conditions.

On GearBest Oukitel WP5000 you buy for about 250 euros, in three different colors. On Amazon, however, it costs 299 euros. In any case, the price is in line with the features offered, especially those concerning the protection of the terminal.
