Android users have now found in Huawei a real point of reference, indeed a starting point, when it comes to choosing cheap smartphones, but aesthetically valid and good performance. A little surprisingly, Huawei P Smart arrived in recent weeks, a product that we decided was worth investigating with a test.
Aesthetics
At the time of the presentation it looked almost like a clone of Huawei Mate 10 Lite and Honor 7X, but in the hand it makes a whole different effect. Yes, because if it is true that in the shapes it follows the two terminals mentioned, in the dimensions it is contained, proposing a 5.65 inch display, instead of 5.99.
The difference may seem minimal, but it is not: in the hand it holds really well, it offers frames optimized at its best and in everyday life it is much more manageable than many other top of the range with elongated display and close to 6 inches. Huawei P Smart, then, represents an absolutely interesting choice for those who appreciate 18: 9, but would still like a “small” device in their hands.
It is clear that it is not It is possible to completely use it with one hand (except activating the specific function that restricts the UI), but overall the dimensions are really perfect, even better than Honor 7x and Mate 10 Lite. The overall measurements of Huawei P Smart are 150.1 x 72.05 x 7.45 mm, with a very low weight, equal to 143 grams.
If the dimensions of the panel are really spot on, the overall quality of the display is also excellent, also considering the price range of the device, which is already purchased on the internet around 200 euros . It is based on LCD technology, with Full HD + resolution, and a pixel density of 428 ppi. Always readable and well lit, it absolutely does not leave you thinking of a low cost smartphone.
The colors are faithful, and many settings that allow you to customize the display. There is, for example, the important night mode that reduces the blue point, as well as a particular option to switch from FHD + to HD resolution, to save battery.
Technical features
The technical data sheet, in consideration of the price, is excellent and puts any other mid-range “cinesone” at the corner. The terminal is equipped with the proprietary Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 65 chip (4x 2.36 GHz Cortex-A53 + 4x 1.7 GHz Cortex-A539, with Mali-T830 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of integrated memory and MicroSD slot for expansion. A level of sensors and connectivity nothing is really missing, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, WiFi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, FM radio, fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, sensor proximity and compass.
Beyond numbers and acronyms, Huawei P Smart in everyday life allows you to fully enjoy the Android ecosystem, which works well, and which does not present problems of any kind. Certainly it is not the fastest phone on the market, with animations yes fluid, but not very fluid.
Even typing on the keyboard, without major lag, is however slightly slower than on other terminals. These are details that can only be noticed by who has previously used smartp top of the range hone from over 600 euros, while for all the other Huawei P Smart it will be an absolutely enjoyable and performing terminal.
As per Huawei tradition, the fingerprint sensor is lightning fast, better than even the most famous and expensive competitors. Always fast in unlocking the terminal, it is reliable and succeeds in the objective 10 times out of 10. The operating system is fully updated, it is Android Oreo 8.0 with the EMUI 8.0. The settings system has been completely revolutionized, really simplified, now much more intuitive, with all the settings better arranged within a few sections.
Multimedia
At the multimedia level, the terminal uses a double photographic module, 13 MP + 2 MP, with autofocus, and LED flash. The secondary camera is only used to calculate the depth of the images, but it is sufficient to allow the user to take photos with bokeh effects, then portraits.
The front camera is 8 MP, with f. 2.0. Overall, the photographic quality is absolutely acceptable and in line, if not above, the price of the terminal, of about 200 euros, even on Amazon. As always we leave you to a photo gallery taken without corrections and without any filter.
Even the front camera is, in consideration of the price, it is appreciable, and returns excellent selfies, even with the help of the beauty filter, now typical on all Huawei terminals. The videos, on the other hand, are recorded at 1080p at 30 fps: they are good, with natural colors, a bit slow the change of focus, and not stabilized. In any case, always in the price range, Huawei P Smart does not fear comparisons.
Among other considerations, a mention of reception and autonomy cannot be missed. During the tests we did not register any reception problems, with calls always clear and crystal clear. The terminal did not experience sudden drops in signals, with an always stable and constant 4G, and consequent high download speeds. From the point of view of autonomy, P Smart performs well, it absolutely covers a stressful day, also leaving a residual percentage before going to bed.
At the sound level, the terminal offers a loudspeaker mono (of course, considering the price). In itself the quality is not bad, the volume is also satisfactory, but overall it seems to tend towards cold sounds. It is forgiven, however, with the implementation of FM radio, for many users still an advantage not to be underestimated. Audio in capsule, good during conversations, while the speakerphone has a somewhat low volume.
Conclusions
Just as we opened the review, we close it: not only Huawei has shown that it knows how to deal with the top of the range (read Mate 10 Pro), but it is now true reference point for all those looking for a smart and aesthetically valuable smartphone, while remaining within a low price range. Absolutely contained dimensions, even with a large 18: 9 display, make it a young, fashionable terminal, but suitable for everyone.
Amazon sells it for about 210 euros, but from sellers third parties it is even possible to go below the 199 euro range. At this price it is absolutely a best buy.

Huawei P Smart is Huawei's “light” phone for winter-spring 2018 presented in Italy on a social occasion with bloggers and influencers that we report on this page. dedicated to those who love TV series, selfies and easy gaming. With the now usual dual camera (Dual: 13 MP + 2 MP, autofocus, LED flash) on the back that Huawei has accustomed us to combined with the powerful 8 MP front camera and places itself in an interesting price range. The good screen of 1080 x 2160 pixels, 427 ppi is combined with a good overall size thanks to the “elongated” format that users like so much and the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back. The power socket is the classic micro-USB and not the latest USB-C of the top-of-the-range models.
