Huawei has not only managed over time to enter the stage of top-of-the-range smartphones through the front door, but has also been able to completely transform the mid-range sector, offering terminals at very low prices, with technical characteristics of thickness and absolutely valid design. Keep doing it with the Huawei Mate 10 Lite. You feel that it is a “lite” version and not a flagship, but at the same time it is the ideal solution for those who do not want to give up anything, having a beautiful and performing terminal in their hands, without spending a fortune.
The aesthetics, needless to say, now follow the fashion of the moment: 18: 9 display, this time with a 5.99 diagonal inches, Full HD + resolution. The form factor follows that of all the current top of the range, with a very clean aesthetic, and a body to ratio of 76.5%, according to the paper. In the hand, honestly, it seems to have a higher ratio between screen and front part.
Dimensions and weight of the terminal have nothing to envy to the top of the range, with a good optimization: 156.2 x 75.2 x 7.5 mm, with a weight of 164 grams. Let's be clear, it is a difficult terminal to use completely with one hand, even if in this it helps the one-handed mode, which at the software level reduces the UI to the screen.
Completely clean front, side right with volume rocker and on / off button, while on the left there is the trolley for the SIM, or SIM + MicroSD. On the lower edge there is the 3.5mm headphone jack, flanked by a MicroUSB connector. Even from the details, such as the absence of a USB-C connector, Huawei reminds us that we are facing a medium range.
On the back the classic fingerprint sensor, which appears to be among the more precise and faster on the market, as per Huawei tradition, placed just below the double chamber, arranged vertically.
The back certainly does not reach the elegance and maniacal care that Huawei has reserved for Mate 10 Pro, but overall, even from this point of view, the terminal does not seem to fear comparisons with other top of the range, resulting aesthetically pleasing from anywhere you look at it.
Good display, with LCD technology and a pixel density of 409 ppi. The default colors are well calibrated, but for those with particular preferences it is possible, through options in the Settings menu, to calibrate the hue, choosing between warmer or colder colors. The whites are good, which remain so even when you look at the display from different positions, while the blacks, excellent with the front display, turn slightly to gray when you put the display transversely. This is an absolutely expected behavior, which can be seen on almost all LCDs, even with a higher matrix.
The terminal mounts Huawei proprietary chipset, HiSilicon Kirin 659, an Octa-core CPU (4 × 2.36 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4 × 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53), flanked by a Mali-T830 GPU, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of integrated memory . These are good technical specifications, which make the terminal run optimally, whatever the operation involved.
Overall the terminal is fluid, never has lag or sudden slowdowns, but if compared to a real top of the range, you feel that you have a medium range in your hands: in short, between a Mate 10 Pro and a Mate 10 Lite you absolutely feel a superior general fluidity of the first over the second.
It is normal that this is the case, but this difference in reactivity is perceived only when the Mate 10 Lite is combined with a flagship of a completely different price range. In everyday life, using Mate 10 Lite is absolutely pleasant, without experiencing limitations of any kind.
Only in the videogame department, when you try to play particularly heavy titles, you will hear a not too high frame rate. If, for example, with titles of the caliber of Clash Royale you do not feel any problems, with Asphalt 8 you notice a not excellent game fluidity.
Cameras
On the rear Mate 10 Lite boasts of a double camera of 16 MP + 2 MP, with phase detection autofocus, LED flash, capable of recording videos with maximum resolution The lack of 4K recording always reminds the user to have a mid-range in their hands, while on the front there is space for a double 13 MP module with f / 2.0 aperture + another 2 MP camera. The photos are absolutely in line with the price range, they are able to capture a lot of details, with extreme precision, as long as in optimal light conditions. However, HDR does not seem too powerful, which although present, returns not too interesting results: the photos with and without HDR are very similar to each other.
In the dark, or in the absence of adequate lighting, the images have a pronounced photographic noise, but even in this case it is all justified by the price range. In short, a room that defends itself particularly well during the day, but which needs a very steady hand in the evening. I
n any case, one can only be satisfied with the two cameras of the device. Good bokeh effect, also present on the front camera: in both cases it works well, but on the rear it is more precise and enjoyable. The gallery above allows you to appreciate the quality of the rooms.
Software side Mate 10 Lite presents the most classic of EMUI, in version 5.1, while the operating system is still Nougat 7. There is no lack of manufacturer customizations, with some pleasant features, such as the possibility of one-handed use, from activate with a slide on the virtual buttons, which allows you to use the entire interface with one hand.
For the rest, the writer does not really appreciate the icons and themes proposed by Huawei in the rich store available : in many cases they lack homogeneity, and in others they are not so modern and flat. In any case, these are extremely subjective elements.
The 3340 mAh battery is good, it certainly allows you to arrive in the evening with a residual percentage of salvation, when you make an intense use. A day and a half, however, can be reached with more moderate use.
Conclusions
Huawei Mate 10 Lite is an excellent mid-range, which in many respects has nothing to fear at higher-end terminals. Good display, good multimedia department, and absolutely valid from an aesthetic point of view. In everyday use it is fluid, and you realize you are in front of a medium range only when you put it alongside and compare it directly with a top of the range.
Officially it costs 349 euros, but on Amazon you can already buy at 300 euros, a price absolutely in line with what it offers.
