Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,, Moto X4 is Motorola's mid-range proposal, although to tell the truth with this terminal you are closer to the high end, and less to the medium one. We have tested it thoroughly for several weeks, in order to understand if it is valid and if it can find space in this increasingly crowded market.
Motorola Moto X4 review: aesthetics
The first time you pick it up, you don't feel any sense of disorientation. Especially on the front, Moto X4 does not go off the rails that it has followed with its latest smartphones. On a more careful analysis, however, pleasant news is perceived. First of all the coloring, particularly iridescent under the sun's rays, or even under artificial light. Furthermore, on the back there is a particular camera module, with the two sensors set inside what looks like the face of a classic watch. You may like it, or you may not like it, but it certainly cannot be said that the choice is not original. Moreover, the writer did not particularly appreciate it from the photos and videos distributed on the net, but once in hand the effect proved to be particular and appreciable.
Also on the back you can see curved glass at the edges, which allow you to hold the terminal more comfortably, as well as providing a pleasant aesthetic. Nothing particular on the front, with acceptable side frames, which can be improved instead on the upper and lower part. All in all, however, the lower edge is absolutely not wasted, and indeed it incorporates a fingerprint sensor, which unlike the first Motorola smartphones, also acts as a soft touch button, which allows you to eliminate the virtual keys on the screen, thus being able to enjoy of the entire 5.2-inch area provided by the panel. Aesthetically, in short, it is pleasant, but overall it almost makes the impression of a 5.5-inch: probably, it was possible to optimize the dimensions more, equal to 48.4 x 73.4 x 8 mm. On the other hand, the weight of just 163 grams is good. Technical characteristics
The aesthetic is always subjective, but overall the Moto X4 is a pleasant one. Even more so when you start using it on a daily basis. For the record we list the technical data sheet of the device which, we anticipate immediately, translates into a more than satisfying use: Moto X4 is just a pleasant surprise, it can be used very well, always ready and responsive, it has never shown signs of abating. and he didn't really miss a beat. Display, as already mentioned, from 5.2 inches, with a not excellent screen to body ratio, equal to 68.4%, Full HD resolution and good pixel density, of 424 ppi. It mounts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, then an Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, flanked by an Adreno 508 GPU, with 4 GB of RAM to support and an integrated 64 GB storage.
As anticipated, in the daily Moto X4 does not really fear comparisons. We made intensive use of it, not sparing it from any point of view. Messaging, games, navigation, and so on and so forth, have always responded in a timely manner. In everyday use we have not registered even a small lag, nor an uncertainty, and the terminal has always been snappy and functional from every point of view. The extra gear is also represented by the Moto Display, which allows you to view the notifications, and interact with them, without even having to unlock the terminal.
When any notification arrives, the display turns on, but remains completely black, showing white ions representing messages and emails. Just keep pressing your finger on the screen to read the preview of the message, then being able to slide to get rid of the notification, or to read a preview. Furthermore, when the device is placed on a surface, it is possible to turn on the Moto Display, and view the previews, simply by swiping the hand over the upper sensor. These are features that are particularly appreciated in everyday life, and that after using them for a long time, are missing when you switch to other smartphones.
Camera
There is a lot to say about the camera department. On the back a double configuration, 12 MP (f / 2.0, 1.4 µm, PDAF, dual pixel) + 8 MP (f / 2.2, 1.12 µm, no AF), with PDA, autofocus, dual-LED dual-tone flash, check quality. The main camera is capable of recording in 4K, while the wide-angle one at 1080p. The camera app did not seem to us among the best available, and it is not very fast in the transition between the two cameras. Furthermore, even the effects available to the user are not very many, and half, at least in the depth tab, are still in beta. Particular, certainly not fundamental, is the effect that allows you to select a single color, thus taking a photo in black and white, with the presence of a single chosen shade. The result, in this case, is always interesting, fun and well done.
As for the quality of the photos, as always we leave you with a gallery of images taken with the terminal, to which we do not apply any filter. Overall, the photos are pleasant, they manage to capture colors well, always vivid in respect of reality, with a good number of details. The best result is obtained, as always, in good lighting conditions, while something is lost in poor lighting conditions.
As for the front button, thanks to the Moto Action, Motorola has solved the initial problems, when the button was only used as Touch ID. On the Moto X4, on the other hand, in addition to unlocking the terminal, the key also allows you to return to the Home, go back, recall the apps in multitasking and start Google Assistant. This, as already mentioned, allows you to fully enjoy the 5.2 inches of the display, which will not have to host virtual keys on the screen. The Touch ID is not the fastest, but it is always on time, and it unlocks the terminal 10 times out of 10.
Nothing to object to the software, which excluding the proprietary Motorola apps linked to the aforementioned Moo Actions, is almost totally stock. The battery life is normal, from just 3000 mAh, but able to make the user arrive in the evening with a good dose of residual charge.
Motorola Moto X4 review: conclusion
Moto X4 can be considered among the top in the medium range. Everything works well, in everyday life he has never given his side to any problem. If this is what is expected from a 399 euro terminal, the extra gear is represented by the Moto Display, a feature to be appreciated, which allows you to view the notifications, and interact with them, with extreme ease, without even unlocking. the terminal.
The price list costs 399 euros, but online you can buy it for much less. At the time of writing, for example, it costs 315 euros on Amazon.
