Casio Pro Trek WSD-F20 review, the near-perfect enduro

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,,

Pro Trek WSD-F20 is the smartest model of the entire Casio list: the well-adapted intelligence of Android 2.0 and several sensors on board make it a model suitable for those who love adventure life, always keeping everything under control, without fear of getting wet or taking too many shots.

We tried the new Casio during the holidays in Croatia, among woods, peaks and seas of one of the splendid Istrian islands, aiming for the goal and letting the WSD-F20 show the muscles and merits of a real wrist computer, with or without a smartwatch in tow: the judgment is good, the model is robust, complete and well within the Casio philosophy, even if there are some limits.

WSD-F20 on the wrist

The first time we wore the WSD-F20 on the wrist we felt it was ours, like the various other Casio models we wore during our lifetime (who didn't?). The look is decisive, captivating, personal and well designed for an inevitably male wrist given the considerable volume of the case.

Quite different from the idea that Casio had of the Edifice series smartwatches, of which we have spoken here, the Pro Trek line is distinctly more sporty and outdoor than Edifice so much so that the two models are related only in name.

Pairing with a smartwatch is done via the Android Wear App (available for iPhone and Android, in our case we used it with a Moto Z2 Play, reviewed here): the operating system is in fact that of Google, in version 2.0, in our case once we opened the package we proceeded to a couple of different updates, nothing that in any case substantially changed the nature of the model.

It is made of soft plastic: Casio distributes an all-black version, like the one we tested, and a second one that sports a more orange-colored case, less minimalist.

On the outside of the case there are three buttons, all on the same side: the central one opens to the list of Apps, as in all Android Wear, while the upper and lower ones open respectively to Casio's specific Apps (Altimeter, Barometer, Sunrise and sunset. , Compass and Activity Tracking) and the Map (also available offline, if downloaded in advance).

The 1.3 ″ display with a resolution of 320 x 300 pixels is obviously Touchscreen and, beyond the deep customization carried out by Casio, allows the use of all the Apps present on the Google Play Store for Android Wear (if you have an Android smartphone, cheaper if you use an iPhone).

The animations are very beautiful, both in the different quadrants and in the Apps, where they are simpler but always clear and that make use easy and always visible. The dials are different from each other and focus on very specific experiences and uses: from the standard one that constantly identifies the position to the simpler one that shows the time, passing through one that focuses on the history of the altimeter to the other in G-Shock style ending with the classic hands: the impression, however, is that the care on the dials has been very careful and that Casio has understood that the way to better identify the product in the sea of Android Wear is precisely to focus on the dials.

The Apps are very useful: WSD-F20 is not a model for runners (there are no specific programs and the heart rate sensor is missing) but it is great if you like walking in the mountains, go by bicycle (sporty on non-road routes), and pay in the lake or if you go fishing in semi-unknown places.

The list of data detected by the GPS and other sensors is very detailed: the list of quadrants should be reviewed to find the best one based on activities, but each data is easily accessible with two slides on the screen or a click on the appropriate button.

Pro Trek WSD-F20 Study the map, download it and then leave

The live map is interesting, and it is also possible to download it offline (to leave the smartphone at home) however the level of detail could be better.

Interesting use of the battery: in our tests the watch reaches almost two days when used normally, a poor day when you activate the GPS during activities, but it takes about an hour for a full charge. A “Clock” mode can also be activated from the menus which, in practice, turns off Android Wear and only activates the display for the time like a G-Shock (not to leave you completely alone if you are running out of battery).

On the other hand, the charging connector can be improved, which is not too powerful and tends to come off too easily.

Lights and shadows

In all honesty WSD-F20 is a beautiful watch, very nice if you like the typical look of Casio watches and the presence of Android Wear 2.0 opens up to a vastness of operations that even the most advanced non-smart Casio models can only dream of. .

A heartbeat sensor is missing here, but it is a “defect” that is such only for some, since we see the model more as a companion for those who walk, row, fish and other recreational activities and not a model for a professional sport.

The power expressed by the internal processor is sufficient for most tasks, however here and there we have n some slowdowns, especially on very steep vertical climbs: it must be said that the slowdowns were only interface because according to our estimates the detection continued without problem.

What is missing, in particular, is a Casio system that retrieves all the watch data and allows users to consult them later: a cloud portal that can be consulted via the web or from an App that detaches from Google and allows users to relive GPS tracking or other types of data after some time, as to verify two or more sessions at the same time.

An important lack, which other competitors have and which unequivocally certifies the smart essence of the model compared to the other Casio models.

Pro Trek WSD-F20 The Android Wear App

On the wrist, everywhere

Casio WSD-F20 is a good product with Android Wear, a top model that Casio needed to have in the price list and that will make happy as many as à they use a G-Shock model and want an extra step. It is perhaps a bit challenging to carry every day but certainly suitable for any type of non-sporting outdoor trip, from the woods to the lakes.

The missing step is all software and we hope that Casio , over time, do not fail to surprise us in this area: in case we will be happy to take this model (or its evolution, who knows) in hand and review this already good judgment in itself.

Casio WSD-F20 is available in affiliated stores at the suggested price of 499.00 Euro, but can also be found online at Amazon.it
