Elgato Weather review: the Homekit mini weather station

Home CasaVerdeSmart ,,,,, The look is that of the elegant Eve products: glossy white and rounded corners to make the devices elegant and can be positioned anywhere. elgato Weather does not contradict itself and despite having IPX3 water resistance, it does not renounce the typical livery of the German company's Homekit products. The dimensions are 79x79x32 mm.

We have been testing the device for several months, when it was still sold with its green box and we can testify that after a long time outdoors, even if under a balcony, and after a lot of rain, wind and red sand , we have changed batteries only once and we have never had any malfunctions and this is already a certainty for a product that has to live outside the house.

The packaging

The packaging is the classic cardboard one with a prevailing white background and inside we find the device, the batteries for the first start and the micromanualetto that teaches us to include the peripheral in Homekit by reading the XXX-XX-XXX code typical of the platform but not before having activated Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad.

The inclusion procedure is usually very fast and once started, eve Weather will begin to collect data by making about 135-145 readings per day with an accuracy of 0.3 ° C, 3% humidity and 2mbar in order to provide you not only the value instantaneous but also the one for the whole month, week, day and in the last hours.

Obviously, for the “local” reading, no home automation hub or Wi-Fi gateway is needed: the data is read through bluetooth communication with the phone and we must say that the transmission efficiency is high : our consultation point has two rooms, two partitions + external wall from the positioning of the device and is easily seen by the iPhone. If you want to consult the device from outside the home or from very distant rooms, you must use an Apple TV 4 that acts as a Wi-Fi “bridge” with Weather.

The overall picture on elgato eve The data collected let's go to program … diagrams on iPhone iphone 5s unpacking The large graphs available on iPad iphone 5s unpacking with the possibility of comparison iphone 5s unpacking and a really comfortable view of peaks and lows

Siri tells you how cold (and what humidity) it is

Obviously, being integrated into HomeKit, the elgato device can be consulted on Apple Watch and via Siri to inform you of the external weather conditions at any time. Barometric pressure cannot be provided directly but only through the eve application. And the latter is the keystone for the use of Weather: the elgato app is certainly one of the best tools for using the individual products of the company but also a very powerful control center for all connected devices, allowing a global view of parameters that “Home” and even the applications of other manufacturers do not show you. In addition, the “eve” app is able to show detailed graphs of all the evolution of temperature, humidity and barometric pressure and even to share them in a spreadsheet in order to use them for comparisons and reports. Furthermore, the possibility of using the device anywhere without having to reconfigure it will help us even on vacation or in case there is a need to collect data in “nomadic” mode.

After 12 months of work in the cold, in the heat, in the sandy wind … It works great! Keep all data of one year and maintains its elegant look It can be hung using this loop The battery compartment and the reset hole.

Ildo and the sandy border we must say that all the data collected are stored in the local memory and you can also “forget” about an eve Weather in the country house and reconnect to it after 6 months to recollect all the temperature, humidity and pressure data that have been collected in the meantime.

Programming

Being able to know the real and local external temperature and maybe even the internal one with other Elgato accessories (eve Room, Fibaro accessories, controlled sockets etc) can help us in some automations and controls, for example in starting a darkening system / protection from the sun if the difference is too high, evaluate whether it is good to ventilate and heat or cool a room in combination with the outside or have us report threshold values above or below which we would like to receive a notification from our iPhone or iPad. Using it remotely you could intervene when the weather conditions endanger your flowers or garden products (sudden frosts) and ask neighbors or relatives to intervene …

Conclusions

To become a real weather station eve Weather should equip itself with a rain sensor and one for the wind, in reality the device replaces the classic barometer with external sensor that we used until yesterday by replacing the internal screen with the display of your iPhone: more we have the possibility to consult it remotely and to have a precise graph of the weather conditions that can also be exported on a spreadsheet. The quality of the product from the point of view of weather resistance is indisputable: it has withstood the rigors of winter and this summer's peaks of 42 ° C due to global warming.

Pro

Show ultra-local outdoor conditions with effectiveness, excellent build quality, long battery life. Reliability in bad weather. Extremely exhausting and exportable graphics. Homekit integration.

Against

For remote access you need to have Apple TV or an iPad at home.
