Cyber Layman tested the new Apple tablet for a couple of weeks, in the version that does not miss anything: A10X Fusion processor, True Tone screen and ProMotion (we'll talk about it in a moment), LTE connection as well as Wi-Fi and 512 GB of storage. Half a terabyte of data that can be saved in the more expensive version of Apple's little monster.
The new screen
The new iPads almost always have a new display, one of the parts that has contributed more and more to the realization of a thin device over time. In this case, however, Apple has outdone itself. We tried the iPad Pro version 10.5 ″ is the first thing that strikes and the most interesting, from many points of view.
True Tone technology is already known: in this case it allows you to have a superior color vision compared to other devices on the market, allowing you to adapt the color temperature to that of the ambient light. This, together with the P8 extended color gamut is great for film and photography. It also helps reduce reflections thanks to the new lamination and the more generous size of the screen compared to the frame.
True Tone technology was already present on the first iPad Pro 9.7, now as well as on the iPad Pro 10.5 it is also present on the Pro 12.9 ″. On the other hand, the thing that if you do not see it you do not understand how much it can improve the user experience is the ProMotion system, for years at the Apple studio, which allows you to change the speed of the screen refresh. The scrolling of the windows becomes solid and consistent in an unprecedented way: the finger practically moves with an effect as if it were dragging what is contained behind the glass.
Apple Pencil
An accessory that transforms without needing to be changed. The Apple Pencil itself becomes a much faster and more efficient object: a latency of 20 milliseconds that Apple explained to us can drop down to 8 milliseconds and complex machine learning lagorhythms to be able to predict the movement of the hand (calculations made both on the basis of information taken from the multitouch surface of the tablet and from the sensors of the pen itself).
The result is an experience that feels even more natural. Of course, the “grip” of the screen remains the biggest problem, as it offers very little resistance to pen movement, falsifying the reality effect as if you were actually writing on the screen. But the result in our test shows a marked improvement over the previous generation of screens for the iPad Pro 9.7.
The dimensions of the new iPad Pro
The writer has been using the iPad Pro 9.7 as his main work machine for a year. Thanks also to the Smart Keyboard, the iPad is able to make up for the many limitations of the current iOS versions and provide a more than satisfactory user experience with respect to some activities and considerable portability, flexibility, battery life.
The iPad Pro 10.5 improves on all of this. The size is apparently the same and the writer has a hard time recognizing one from the other if he is not careful. In practice, weight, portability and handling are unchanged. IPads in versions from 2010 until now have always had a 9.7 screen, which is just under an inch smaller than the current one. So why this change?
We wondered and the answer is easily found gin from the first days of testing. The new iPad is better, it adds the little bit that makes a small qualitative leap to the whole. A marginal increase that is worth a lot. The on-screen keyboard and the Smart Keyboard now become substantially “normal” and the fingers of the writer – especially with large hands – thank you.
In the change in size, the reduction of the frame plays a role, since it is sharper, that is, with less space between the screen and the edges of the device. This could cause problems handling a tablet or smartphone but, fortunately, with iPad Pro 10.5 these problems do not exist. It also helps that the weight has remained the same and substantially the thickness as well. The measurements of the body change by half and one centimeter on the high side and on the long side. Small changes that in our experience make a big difference.
Performance and autonomy
A new iPad always carries a new processor with it. In this case the “heart of the little monster”: the A10X Fusion (common to both iPad Pro sizes) with six cores, three of which are faster and three are more economical. Apple, which is always very consistent in battery life announcements, has long chosen to have tablets that can run for ten hours. The new Pro model absolutely does not contradict the indications. Apple's choice not so much to see how far it can take the autonomy of its tablet as to calibrate the specifications and the size of the battery to reach this standard target is truly remarkable and probably unique on the market.
All this happens with a processor that has benchamrk higher than the Intel “M” processors of the new 12-inch MacBook and comparable (albeit slightly lower) to the basic configurations of the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro. Which is remarkable when you consider that the first version of the iPad was far slower than the slowest MacBook. However, it is not because of the sheer speed that people buy these tablets, in our opinion.
Instead, it's the user experience and flexibility. As well as a constant approach to the professional world, that is the attempt to replace the traditional personal computer. To do this, the operating system of the iPad is just as important as the technical specifications. Apple has released the beta of iOS 11, which we have already talked about, which, however, in the final version will only be released in the fall (the beta for developers is already ready from the day of WWDC on June 5, while the public beta will arrive shortly, by probably July) and therefore it is still too early to say that there will be a truly functional integration. We will see it in the field, considering that drag and drop, enhanced split view and document management (local, iCloud and major providers such as Dropbox and others) are truly remarkable enhancements, but all to be verified in the field.
In conclusion
The new iPad Pro 10.5 has been called “the best iPad ever made by Apple” and “the perfect representation of Apple's philosophy”. We can only agree. The many small quantitative changes increase the overall quality of the device, making it a real powerful and flexible tool. The official introduction of iOS 11 is still missing – and it would not be correct to do a review based on a product still in beta – but it is already clear that this iPad Pro has the appearance of its “brothers” but a new spirit. It's what the first iPad Pro should have been, for sure, with lots of small improvements.
We conclude by saying that in fact the iPad Pro 10.5 is the true “champion” of Apple products. In our test it showed speed, flexibility, power, autonomy. Excellent quality audio, video camera capable of shooting videos at 4K (12 megapixels in the rear and 7 in the front).
