Bose Soundlink Revolve Bluetooth, review of the reference Bluetooth speaker

Home CasaVerdeSmart ,,,,,

Soundlink Revolve Bluetooth is the new portable speaker from Bose: (quite) small, robust, with excellent sound quality and 360 ° audio, however, it has a very important task on its side that weighs heavily like a boulder on its climb to success.

Four or five years ago, in fact, Bose presented to the world Soundlink, a small portable Bluetooth speaker with characteristics and cost (at the time) important. Over time, Soundlink has literally been able to create a real loudspeaker market which today counts countless competitors of all brands but which still sees Bose as the reference point and the creator of the trend.

Soundlink Revolve's task, which in one way or another will replace Soundlink in the Bose proposal, is not only to excel in the market, as more or less all models want to do, but also to be a worthy successor to a model so important.

After the test we are more than positive, because this product offers some really important features and an updated vision of a market that has evolved and to which Bose has been very attentive.

Soundlink Revolve, the audio built around us

Already out of the box we understand that Soundlink Revolve is not a simple upgrade of the SoundLink, but a redesign. Users today see this type of objects in a very common way and take it everywhere, in the garden as in the bathroom (or in the pool), in the office as well as in the pool, at the sea or in the mountains. The shape has also changed, more demanding but vertical, and therefore easier to position.

Above all, it is likely that Bose has reflected on the use and evaluated that most of the time you listen to music in companion: hence the 360 ° audio, which is perhaps the most concrete news that can be seen, among many others. Among other things, in the presence of two SoundLink Revolves it is possible to create a pairing so that they sound synchronized (but we could not test it).

While the old Soundlink was directional, with Revolve everywhere we si metta enjoys a great rendering with a slightly warm tone, which is great when outdoors, because you can roam freely in the environment without losing the attentive whisper of Sinéad O'Connor in Nothing compares 2U, as well as placing it in the center of a room letting all participants hear Somewhere Over The Rainbow correctly in the original version of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and be amazed.

Yes, because here comes the first Good news: Whether it's Israel's hot voice of Axl Rose's cutting edge in Welcome To The Jungle, as well as the humming voice of Sting's Englishman In New York, then Soundlink Revolve is a good travel companion. To be picky the only song he fell a little bit on was Tell Me Now (What You See) by Moya Brennan (on the music of Hanz Zimmer), a track that is however very difficult for all types of speakers, in particular for those with such a small sound box where the high contrast between the singer's voice and the symphonic rhythm never holds up well enough.

The result, however, is very important also because with a 360 sound ° maintaining quality was more difficult than with directional audio, and here the work of Bose shows it all: for comparison, the cabinet offers a better sound impression than the audio department of the iMac 27 retina, used for the test, at any angle, with a greater tone and a stronger reinforcement for the bass.

The power is zero without the control

Two passive radiators placed in a central vertical position offer an unthinkable power for such a small product, reaching the correct coverage mind a room, even a large one, with a rich and powerful sound.

Outdoors there are no problems, so if you take them to the sea or the pool they will attract the attention of a very large area (but be careful not to disturb, not everyone wants to listen to your music), and given the considerable presence, it is possible that at the distance the bass reaches more than the other frequencies.

But as one said famous advertising, power is nothing without control: this is how the Bose App is the extra weapon that many competitors do not have. First of all, the App allows complete control over the playback of songs and the volume (obviously you can also do it from the other Apps, but here it is more convenient), it shows the battery status and allows you to update the firmware if needed (operation inexplicably very slow).

The rear MicroUSB connector for charging, next to the analog input The upper push-button panel The power supply

But above all, let Soundlink Revolve connect to two devices at the same time, typically a computer and a smartphone: sound exits from the device that last checked the speaker, but if a phone call arrives in the silenced one, Soundlink Revolve automatically switches, and then returns to the main device at the end, automatically.

É a function that is very convenient, and that is common to several Bose products (we had already tried it in the Bose QC35 headphones, which we reviewed here).

Last but not least, Soundlink Revolve it also offers special attention because … it speaks, and is a real chatterbox: the voice messages confirm the switching on and off, the Bluetooth pairing phases, the battery status and the devices to which it is connected (as well as the analogue output) , but they also detect the name of the person calling us (when the mobile phone rings, if the number is in the phone book), and confirm the device switch at the end of the call.

In addition, a special key is used for the use of Siri on iOS and Google Now on Android, to activate searches on the connected device.

The technical details

After the emotional part we just have to underline the technical details: just over half a kilogram of weight for a squat and rounded cylinder of 15 cm high by 8 wide (at the base, something less at the roof). The surface is satin metal with rubberized upper edges and base, excellent for cushioning falls: in this regard we have not made extreme tests but a fall from the desk (accidental) did not bring any damage, neither visible nor internal, a sign that the project is I was also attentive to the robustness item.

The grip is firm thanks to the satin surface and the IPX4 certification leaves you calm in case of splashes of water, even if you cannot immerse it.

The internal battery has a duration of 12 hours, which we can honestly endorse: in addition we can say that the charge resists very well even when turned off, since we have not used it for about three days and the percentage of remaining charge has not changed.

Considerations

Considering all the features listed above, it is clear that we are dealing with a device that, in the market, inevitably creates a reference point, a worthy heir of the first S oundlink: Revolve sounds good in every direction, has a great battery and an enviable water and drop resistance; you pay for all these features, and here comes the only downside, a slightly above average final cost.

it can also cost (much) less, but if you have a refined palate, a design need to respect or want to give a gift that is worthy of the name, the circle narrows, and Revolve is certainly among them.
