As the summer approaches, the dance of drones begins and not just professional and expensive ones. There is also a parallel world, made up of very cheap products, which allow a few minutes of fun, without giving up important features, such as FP flight, or with a first-person view from the camera. Cyber Layman tried GoolRC, which looks very familiar to those who know Yuneec.
Aesthetically , in fact, the drone looks like a reproduction miniature of the powerful and equipped Yuneec Q500 and 500+. A truly aggressive shape, with an elongated body and the four usual motors that form the usual virtual square. It weighs about 150 grams , including the chamber, and has dimensions of approximately 31 cm per side . It is a small model, easily transportable, and extremely light. On the back there is the compartment that houses the small 600 mAh battery .
At level aesthetic this GoolRC makes a rather marked choice, aesthetically aggressive, differing from many other competitors in the same price range, which instead take their cue from DJI and the like.
Exceptional feature in this drone is the possibility of FPV flight . This means placing your smartphone, iOS or Android, on top of the remote control, and viewing in real time what the drone is looking at. Needless to say, with an unstabilized 0.3mp camera, the chances of quality footage are very few. It is certainly not a work tool with which to make video or photographic services, but a Sunday pastime. Nonetheless, the FPV works fairly well. This is because on a small display, such as that of a smartphone, the image projected in real time is all in all satisfactory.
At this address the app dedicated to iOS, compatible only with iPhone , while from here you can download the Android version.
It is certain that if you project the full-screen movie you will begin to notice many more inaccuracies, a poor level of detail and a rather pronounced jello effect. This is normal for a drone in this price range. Nevertheless, viewing the video stream on the smartphone, live, is still pleasant, thanks to a reduced diagonal of the smartphone display. The application, however, allows you to transform the smartphone itself into a controller. It is possible, in fact, to fly the drone with the virtual buttons on the screen in the app, while still enjoying the video stream of what is framed by the small camera on the screen. Below is a shot of the onboard camera.
In any case, the use of the traditional remote control offers greater precision in controlling the drone. Piloting it is pretty straightforward, and the drone appears to respond correctly to controls. We tested it on a day with strong wind and, apart from some obvious problems during the landing phase, the aircraft has always remained under our control.
Sorry to note that the battery life is slightly lower than other models of this kind. It loses a few minutes of flight compared to other small quadcopters, probably due to the video stream sent in real time on the smartphone. The motors are obviously brushless, not brushless, which is why it is possible to assume that you can fly safely, with a double battery, for about 10 minutes, taking care to rest immediately after the drone, so as not to tire the engines.
Conclusions
The GoolRC drone is definitely suitable for beginners, who wish to get started, having a little taste of what FPV flight can deliver; obviously it will not be possible to shoot videos or quality photos, but watching the video stream in real time on a smartphone is still pleasant.
On Amazon it costs 56.93 euros and can be purchased directly from here.
