As the summer approaches, the action cameras seem to rise to a new life; it is not yet time to swim in the sea or on the beach, but some weekend excursions are certainly an opportunity to film. Among the cheapest models is the Damping, which arrives at home with a practically infinite set of accessories, complete with a double battery. Low cost, however, equates to compromises; here's how it works.
How it's done
First of all, the aesthetics. Taking the Daping action cam in hand, you don't notice the difference with the thousands of other devices of the same type. Similar in all respects to any SJ, or similar, it has a power switch on the front, which also allows you to select the various functions, including videos, photos and slow motion, with a selection button instead on the upper part, which acts as a shutter button.
On the back the 2-inch display, not touch screen, however well made, sufficient to be able to view in real time what is framed. On the right side two buttons, which in addition to allowing you to navigate between the menus, allow you to adjust the zoom, up to 4X, or even to activate / deactivate the WiFi. Completely black, in opaque plastic on the front, the Daping action cam is appreciable and elegant.
Among the “pros”, surely, there is the content of the sales package to be appreciated, containing an almost infinite number of accessories. Not only are there numerous supports to adapt the peripheral to helmets, dashboards and bicycle handlebars, but the package also includes a second battery, an element not to be underestimated, which doubles the possibilities of filming. Obviously, there is also the indispensable waterproof case, which allows you to immerse the cam in water, and shoot up to 30 meters deep. Just for the sake of completeness, in addition to zip ties and cleaning cloths, the bundle includes a second lid for the waterproof cover, should replacement over time be necessary. Only this equipment, almost almost, would be enough to justify the selling price, just over 55 euros.
Photo / video quality
The Daping action cam opts for a 16MP SONY CMOS sensor and allows you to record at the following resolutions: 4K or 2.7K at 30 fps, 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, 720p at 30, 60 or 120 fps, especially useful for shooting in slow motion. TEST 4K
Little to say, of course, about 4K. Thinking of being able to achieve quality at this resolution with a low cost camera is simply impossible. The movie is certainly not to be thrown away, but we cannot be silent on the presence of lag, due to a low frame per second. those who want a camera capable of shooting at 4K with excellent quality, will certainly have to refer to other types of much more expensive peripherals. It is likely that those who buy a low cost camera still want to use it for Full HD shooting. It is on this format and on this resolution, then, that attention must be focused.
TEST 1080p – 60 FPS
The quality is sufficient, where the high number of frames per second makes the shooting very smooth and clear. The colors captured by the room are not bad, very bright. Where it certainly loses is in the clarity of the outlines of the subjects, both near and far, with a not too high detail. It particularly suffers when shooting against the light, while it is sufficient in optimal shooting conditions. Another drawback is the lack of video stabilizer: just film while walking to notice all the micro-movements absorbed by the camera, which are promptly catapulted into the movie.
TEST SLOW MOTION
Regarding photographic use, it behaves in a similar way to other similar cams: it tends to emphasize the purple reflections, but overall the images captured with the cam are appreciable, especially for the price range in which it is located. Below is a small gallery that best gives an idea.
Other features
The Daping chamber under test is equipped WiFi module, which allows you to control it directly from your iOS / Android smartphone. Unlike what happens with Chinese applications of the genre, the XDV App is really well done, with a modern graphic interface. In the center of the display, in plain sight, the three icons that allow you to activate the three main functions of the camera: snapshot, video and slowmotion. From here it is possible to set various parameters, such as resolution and in general any other option that can also be managed on the camera. The Android app can be downloaded from here, while the iOS counterpart is at this address; both free.
The action cam Daping offers the driving mode, which is probably one of the most recommended uses for those who buy an inexpensive peripheral. In these situations, in fact, the quality of the film certainly does not matter, as much as shooting exactly what happens on the road, so as to be ready to prove that you are right in a possible accident.
Conclusions
The action cam Daping does not excel certainly for quality; this is an obvious consideration, considering the very low purchase price, which is largely covered by the “infinite” number of accessories present, not to mention the double battery. In short, a peripheral for shooting “Sunday”, but also to be used in the car for your own safety.
