Gboard updates its user interface by adopting the Material You model, introducing rounded elements and support for Dynamic Color. The latest implementation also adds the use of circular popup keys.
Without the “Popup on keypresses” setting enabled, Google Gboard will simply highlight the character tapped on the keyboard and beep or vibrate. On the other hand, if the option is activated, the character is extended with an overlapping rectangular box. For Android 12, the rectangle turns into a circle and matches the rounded style of Material You.
This graphical treatment to the user interface is also applied when you long press the “comma” key for settings or single hand mode and the “period” key for punctuation options.
These Material You popups have been extensively implemented in the latest Gboard beta (version 10.9). With these latest changes, the Google keyboard redesign is almost complete.
