Google has recently announced that it is being released for all Drive users the ability to manage offline files with proprietary formats such as .pdf, documents created with Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and others. The feature was introduced as beta testing way back in 2019 but is only now making its way onto the stable version of the app.
At the moment it is not yet available for the writer, but at the end of the global distribution phase, the news will be accessible through the Google Drive app for desktop on Mac and Windows. To be able to take advantage of it, you must first enable offline editing of files, by going to the settings (the gear icon at the top right) of the version accessible via the web browser and checking that the relative setting is checked.
This way when you try to right-click on a file you will see the toggle “Available offline” appear. Obviously then to get hold of this type of proprietary file you will need to have the relative program installed on your computer. We report that the news will also reach the Files app on Chrome OS.
