Google Maps is Google's map and navigation service, as well as one of the most popular and used in the world. While the use of Maps in today's world has now become a daily routine, its use in the context of Ancient Rome is particular.

This is what some researchers of the Stanford University have done since 2012, creating a site that aims to simulate a trip to Ancient Rome of 200 AD, or at the peak of its expansion. The platform is very similar to what Google Maps offers on current maps: it is possible to plan a trip from one location to another in the Roman Empire, by customizing different parameters such as the use of specific means of transport of the time and the period of travel.

The travel simulation also includes the hypothetical costs that should be incurred. In short, it is as much a didactic as a curious tool for history and geography enthusiasts.

The site is called Orbis , which in Latin stands for “globe”. You can access it via this address. Let us know your impressions in the comment box below.
