Facebook closed 265 accounts spreading fake news in African countries, Latin America and Southeast Asia

Facebook closed hundreds of accounts spreading fake news mainly in African countries and Latin America. Facebook wrote that in total 265 Instagram accounts, Facebook pages and groups were removed attributable to an agency in Israel, Archimedes Group, which had targeted Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Angola, Niger. and Tunisia and countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia.

The people behind these fake accounts mostly posted news involving personal – and false – information about local politicians. About 2.8 million people followed at least one of the Facebook pages involved. Facebook also admitted that since 2012 it has received approximately $ 812,000 for advertising the content created by these accounts.
