Microsoft has announced the closure of its Mixer video game streaming platform, which it acquired in 2016 with the intent of competing in the e-sports sector with the much more popular Amazon-owned Twitch. In the statement released by Microsoft, it is explained that in recent times it had become clear “that the time needed to expand our livestreaming community was out of proportion with the vision and experiences we want to offer to players” and for this reason it was decided to close Mixer and to move the entire community of users to the Facebook-owned video game streaming platform, Facebook Gaming. Starting July 22, all users who connect to Mixer will be redirected to the new platform.
Since its inception, Mixer hadn't even come close to Twitch success, but a year ago it made a big investment by securing exclusive collaboration with one of the most famous gamers in the world – Tyler Blevins, better known on the Internet as “Ninja” – became known above all thanks to his games in Fortnite, the most popular online video game of recent years, as well as other famous streamers. At the moment it is not clear if Ninja will continue to use Facebook Gaming or if it will return to Twitch: in a tweet published after the announcement of the closure of Mixer, Ninja wrote that he “loves” his community of users on Mixer, but that in the next few days he will have to make “some decisions” about his stay on the platform.
