Snipping tool shortcut
Windows offers a built-in tool for taking screenshots called the Snipping Tool. It’s been around since Windows Vista, and it’s still a great way to take screenshots in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How To use the Snipping Tool with a mouse and keyboard
In order to utilize the Snipping Tool when you have a mouse and keyboard available, simply:
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The desktop will darken while you select an area for your screenshot.
- Rectangular mode is selected by default. You can change the shape of your snip by choosing one of the following options in the toolbar: Rectangular mode, Window mode, Full-screen mode, and Free-form mode.
- The screenshot is automatically copied to your clipboard. A notification also appears once you’re finished taking a screenshot, select it for more editing options.
How To use the Snipping Tool with only a mouse
- To open the Snipping Tool, select Start, enter snipping tool, then select it from the results.
- Select New to take a screenshot.
- When you open Snip & Sketch, Rectangular mode is selected by default. You can change the shape of your snip by choosing one of the following options in the toolbar:Rectangular mode: This mode allows you to select a specific area of your screen. To use this mode, click and drag your mouse to draw a rectangle around the area you want to capture.Window mode: This mode allows you to select a specific window on your screen. To use this mode, click the window you want to capture.Fullscreen mode: This mode allows you to capture your entire screen. To use this mode, click the Fullscreen button in the toolbar.Freeform mode: This mode allows you to draw a freeform shape around the area you want to capture. To use this mode, click and drag your mouse to draw a shape around the area you want to capture.
- Once you have taken a screenshot, it will be automatically copied to your clipboard. A notification will also appear, allowing you to select it for more editing options.The Snipping Tool has three capture modes: Free-form Snip, Rectangular Snip, and Window Snip. The mode you choose will determine how you can select the area of your screen that you want to capture.To launch the Snipping Tool, open the Start menu and type “Snipping Tool” into the search bar. Then, click the Snipping Tool icon to launch the app.
Once the Snipping Tool is open, you can choose which capture mode you want to use. Free-form Snip lets you draw any shape around the area you want to capture. Rectangular Snip lets you draw a rectangular area. And Window Snip will capture an entire window.
Once you’ve selected a capture mode, use your mouse to select the area of your screen that you want to capture. Then, release the mouse button to take the screenshot.
The Snipping Tool will then open a new window with your screenshot. From here, you can annotate, save, or share your screenshot.

To take a screenshot with the Snipping Tool:
1. In the Snipping Tool, click the New button or press Ctrl+N.
2. To choose the type of snip you want, click the arrow next to the New button, and then choose Free-form, Rectangular, Window, or Full-screen Snip.
3. To take a new screenshot using the same mode you used last, press Alt+N keys.
4. Select the area of your screen that you want to capture. For a free-form snip, draw the area that you want to capture. For a rectangular snip, drag the cursor around the area that you want to capture. To select a window, click the window that you want to capture. To capture your entire screen, press the Print Screen or Fn+Print Screen keys. The screen will briefly go dim to indicate that you’ve just taken a screenshot.
5. Open the Snipping Tool.
6. Click the New button or press Ctrl+N.
