15 notable inventions of 2018

Prev Next 1 of Previous Next Like every year, the US weekly Time published a list with what it considered to be the best inventions of the year: for 2018, not 25 were chosen as in 2017, but 50, divided according to the area of use. Not all of them seem exceptional to the same extent, so we have chosen the 15 that are apparently more useful or more revolutionary than what is already there, especially in everyday life. For example, there is a promising migraine drug, tights made to last 50 years, a vegetable sausage and a lid for all types of pan.

1. Aira
It is a subscription service for blind or visually impaired people: it allows them to broadcast live-streaming, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, images from the environment that surrounds them to an operator so that this can give him useful indications to reach an object or a place or to carry out some tasks. Aira is designed, for example, to help the blind and visually impaired to tidy up their mail, do the washing machine, match the colors of their clothes and find their place in a stadium or theater. It costs $ 99 per month.

2. Gillette Treo
Common shaving razors are made to be used by someone who shaves himself: that's why they are used by someone else – a nurse or family member – on a person who is unable to shave on his own (because he is sick or disabled), they are uncomfortable and it is easy for someone who is shaved to be injured. The Treo razor by Gillette, recently on sale, has been designed to solve the problem: the head with the blades is flexible and the handle contains a shaving gel, better than shaving foam because it allows you to see clearly where the razor passes. .

3. Sheerly Genius
They are very resistant tights: they are made with a fabric, Sheertex, made with the most resistant polymer that exists, the very high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMXPE), usually used for bulletproof vests. They cost $ 99, but according to the Canadian company that makes them they can last up to 50 years unlike normal tights which can break even the first time you put them on. A pair can be ordered for delivery in March.

4. Zozosuit
The Post had already dealt with this invention: it is a set of leggings and long-sleeved t-shirt, very close-fitting, which is used to take very precise measurements of the body of those who wears it thanks to an app. With these measures then you can buy clothes – for now only a sweater, some type of t-shirt, a shirt and some models of jeans – made to measure, all with an elementary style, for every day, on the Zozo website, which is a Japanese startup. Here you can read more about how it works:

5. Beyond Sausage
Beyond Meat (literally “beyond meat”) is one of the companies that for some years have been trying to produce and distribute foods that appear to be made of meat at the sight, at smell and taste, but in reality they are made of vegetables. Until now Beyond Meat already produced a “hamburger” of this type, the Beyond Burger, and this year it has also started to produce a vegetable sausage, the Beyond Sausage. According to Time, it tastes very similar to real sausages, but contains 43 percent less fat and is much more environmentally friendly to produce.

Beyond honored that @TIME included Beyond Sausage in their Best Inventions of 2018.

From day 1 our vision has been that you don't need an animal to create meat. Our team works hard to build meat directly from plants to bring exciting change to your plate! https://t.co/CiGGhBLMaE

6. Universal Lid
The idea of making a universal lid for pots and pans, i.e. adaptable to a large number of pots and pans, is not new, but according to Time with the Universal Lid by Made In has finally achieved a satisfactory result. It is made of stainless steel and silicone and comes in three different sizes, but these can fit different cookware, as silicone is an elastic and flexible material. The advantages: you do not need to have a large number of lids and it is therefore also easier to find the right one. It costs $ 50 and the first production sold out two days after it went on sale.

7. FreshWorks
The technology of fruit and vegetable containers can also be improved. The Rubbermaid home products company did this with the FreshWorks series of containers, which keep vegetables fresh longer. In the lid there is a filter that regulates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the outside so that it is always optimal (in the ripening process fruits and vegetables consume oxygen and emit carbon dioxide and water) and on the bottom there is a grid that keeps the vegetables away from the water they release and which could favor the development of mold. It doesn't sound like a big innovation, but it can help you waste less food. You can also buy them in Italy, but beware: they should only work if chosen in the right size.

8. LynQ
For some years now there have been those small devices to avoid losing keys and other objects. This invention, basically a compass that works thanks to GPS, comes from a similar concept but is used to find people (and animals). It is designed for those who have to go with a friend or family member to a very crowded place (such as a large outdoor concert) where cell phones may malfunction, or have to keep an eye on a child or a dog. The important thing is that the two people – or the person and the animal – who have to find each other have one each. To use it with children and dogs, you can also set up a “safety area”: when the child or dog leaves, the responsible adult is warned with a sound.

9. Acuvue Oasys with Transitions
These are contact lenses (not yet on sale) that adapt to the light in the environment like Transitions eyeglass lenses. They will allow you to never squint on a very sunny day, even without wearing sunglasses, and without the effect of Transitions spectacle lenses (not always nice to look at).

10. Aimovig
It is a drug to prevent migraines, the first developed specifically for this problem. Until now, treatments consisted of simple pain relieving or nausea cures, while medicines for other diseases are used to reduce headache attacks, such as metroprolol for high blood pressure or valproic acid for epilepsy. They are only partially effective and can have serious side effects. The Aimovig was developed by the pharmaceutical company Novartis and the biotechnology company Amgen and consists of a monthly injection: in the United States the treatment will cost $ 6,900 per year, which experts consider appropriate given the improvement in the quality of the life that promises. Aimovig will not completely eliminate the headaches of migraine sufferers, but it should reduce them by at least 50 percent.

The Post had written about it in more detail here:

There is a promising treatment for migraine

11. Fundamental Surgery
It is a simulator for surgical operations better than the previous ones because it provides tactile information to the surgeons who use it through vibrations similar to those of the phones. It costs less than other simulators and is already used by fifty hospitals in the United States.

12. Nanobébé
It is an easier bottle to hold in the hand for both babies and those who are breastfeeding them, because it is made in the shape of a concave tit. The shape has also been designed to heat the milk faster and evenly, and therefore not alter its nutritional properties too much.

13. Reebok PureMove
It is a sports bra designed to adapt to the type of physical activity that the wearer is carrying out: when you make a sudden movement and the bra fabric stretches, a gel content inside makes it harden, to offer greater support; when, on the other hand, you are at rest, the fabric stretches so that the wearer can breathe well. It costs 60 euros, has been around since August and is the most successful product Reebok has ever sold online.

14. LIA
It is a pregnancy test designed to be biodegradable (it is made of paper) and therefore pollute less but also to be thrown down the toilet after being used: for this reason gives those who use it more privacy, in case someone else uses the same bathroom and therefore the same litter box.

15. The Carry-on Closet
Literally “transport closet”, it is a trolley that contains a fabric drawer structure, similar to those for organizing the Ikea wardrobes, which once when you arrive at your destination, it opens and avoids having to unpack your suitcase as you usually do. It costs $ 200 and is manufactured by Solgaard Design.
