Amazfit Bip U review, the modern version of the very first Bip is served

If there is an inexpensive smartwatch that, more than the others, has had a global success, it is certainly Amazfit Bip. After many years, the team has finally given new life to this product, proposing a new version, called Amazfit Bip U, able to remember its predecessor, in everything, but to improve and modernize many aspects. Here is the new best buy in the fitness watch sector.

After Amazfit Bip S, Bip S Lite, this Bip U distances itself from its predecessors when looking at the display: the product abandons the transflective display, which was the distinguishing feature of the series, to accommodate a more traditional, color display. It is a 1.43-inch TFT unit, with 320 × 302 pixel resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

Very nice, clearly visible, and which offers plenty of space to enter a lot of information: the watch faces available are already many, most of which are really valid and slightly inspired by Apple Watch.

The watch recalls in design that of the ancestor, in all respects, with the main difference in the edges of the display, which originally were completely squared, but now they are curved. The Bio U features a removable 20mm silicone strap, with an adjustable length between 76 and 118mm. It is comfortable, even more so than that of the first Bip: it seems lighter and gentler on the skin, it does not feel even if worn all day.

The Amazfit Bip U is very light, weighing just 31 grams, making it comfortable to wear during a workout and even at night for sleep tracking. The main module is made of polycarbonate and the detachable 20 mm wide straps are made of silicone.

As already mentioned, Amazfit Bip U sports a 1.43-inch color touchscreen, under which the Amazfit logo is located, while on the right side there is the only physical button. This offers good feedback and is used to unlock the watch, wake the screen, return to a previous menu, or pause a workout.

On the back, in addition to the charging pins, there is the SpO2 optical sensor and the BioTracker 2 PPG. Unlike the Bip S and Bip S Lite, these are placed inside a raised circular plate, which helps them make proper contact with the skin for more accurate measurements.

From this point of view we would like to clarify that the measurements always appear plausible and correct when compared with even more expensive trackers, but they are not among the fastest. It is precisely the measurement of stress that tends to be very tiring, and very often it is not carried out: you have to tighten the strap too much and stay practically still.

Amazfit Bip U offers all the features one would expect from a fitness watch. It is, first of all, a heart rate monitor in real time, it can measure the level of oxygen in the blood. It even offers an unprecedented stress monitoring, and has a 5ATM certification.

There is no lack of sleep monitoring, that of the menstrual cycle and, of course, there is no lack of pedometer. As per tradition, however, the watch also offers a smart aspect dedicated to notifications: it is possible to view and read incoming notifications on smartphones, practically all the most used apps, even if it will not be possible to respond in any way, not even with pre-set answers.

Screen

The Amazfit Bip U is equipped with a 1.43-inch color display, with a resolution of 320 × 302 pixels and 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, with a good anti-fingerprint coating. Although not transflective, the visibility of the Bip U's TFT screen outdoors under strong sunlight is quite good at 100% brightness: obviously, from this point of view the transflective screen was at its best.

The screen supports 50 custom watch faces via the Zepp app (formerly Amazfit) but can keep 4 in memory: one of these must be sacrificed and overwritten in order to insert the others.

Software

Amazfit Bip U works with Android and iOS devices by pairing it via the Zepp app, which can be downloaded from the respective app stores for free.

The Zepp app, formerly known as Amazfit, remains the same despite the rebranding. Unfortunately this is not good news, considering that it turns out to be a bit confusing, and not too intuitive. You will have to get used to it before using it to the fullest and with ease.

Not only that, there are many fields in the app that are not related to the Bip U, but are still visible without any data. In short, it seems that the app side has not been treated with the same abundance that Amazfit puts in its smartwatches, always perfect from a design point of view and integrated operating system.

While the official Zepp app remains improvable, the custom OS running on Bip U is responsive and has a simple and intuitive user interface, which can be used immediately without any problem.

Amazfit Bip U works the same way as Bip S and Bip S Lite: a swipe up on the home screen opens the Notification Center and a swipe down opens the Control Center, which provides quick access to features such as Do Not Disturb , Alarm clock and Screen brightness. It also has a shortcut for Settings.

Swiping left or right on the home screen will take you to the Activity Goal, Heart Rate, PAI, Weather, and Music Control pages. It is possible to rearrange the order and remove or add new elements.

Performance

Amazfit Bip U comes with real-time heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen level measurement, sleep monitoring, stress monitoring and menstrual cycle monitoring functions for women. It also supports over 60 sports modes and has inactivity alerts.

In addition to health and fitness functions, Amazfit Bip U supports incoming calls and app notification alerts and also enjoys stopwatch, countdown timer, world clock, weather forecast and camera control functions and wrist music.

For heart rate monitoring, Amazfit Bip U has an integrated BioTracker 2 PPG biological optical sensor, which can automatically measure the heart rate at intervals of 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes.

It also has an SpO2 sensor, which as for stress sometimes refuses to measure the level of oxygen in the blood: it is necessary to tighten the strap well and remain almost motionless. In everyday life you will have to try several times before getting the response.

As for sleep monitoring, Amazfit Bip U is fully promoted and the data is accurate. As far as sport monitoring is concerned, there are more than 60 sports disciplines, all grouped into 10 categories.

Training data is accessible on the smartwatch from the Workout History menu, along with a graphical representation of your heart rate. Unfortunately, unlike the Bip S, the Bip U does not have built-in GPS, so you will need to keep the smartwatch connected to your smartphone if you want to get route tracking.

Notifications

As for notifications, The Bip U shows a maximum of 10 notifications at a time and, like Bip S and Bip S Lite, it does not show the icons of all the apps, as well as it does not show any special characters. However, the smartwatch allows you to check new notifications during a workout, but you cannot delete them, nor check the older ones, which instead will have to be browsed from the Notification Center.

The U beep also alerts you to incoming calls and allows you to reject or deactivate them. It also allows you to reject a call and reply with a text message. All you have to do is swipe up on the smartwatch screen and select one of the preset responses. It is possible to modify these answers or add new ones with a maximum of 140 characters.

Autonomy

The Amazfit Bip U packs a 230mAh battery, which the company says can offer nine days of battery life with the default watchface and automatic heart rate measurement interval set to 10 minutes. The company calculation is made on the basis of 50 notifications received per day, 200 screen activations and a daily outdoor run for 30 minutes, with blood oxygen level measurement twice a day

Beep U and Beep compared

Amazfit Bip U seems to be able to retrace the success of its ancestor, with renewed features and a display that shows much more information on the screen. Too bad for the absence of integrated GPS, however justified by the price: this Bip U costs just 50 euros. Recommended for all those who want to wear it also in everyday life and outside sports activities. The watch faces present are beautiful and complete, the smartphone application needs to be improved, and the accuracy in measuring Stress and oxygen in the blood.
