With the advent of the iPhone 12 line, Apple has revived the MagSafe, changing the concept of the Mac magnetic cable case, and adapting it to their smartphones. The technology combines a magnet on the back of Apple's latest smartphones with wireless charging, offering a new type of wireless charging that is truly convenient. Many third-party manufacturers have welcomed the idea. The Anker 2-in-1 magnetic wireless charger is being tested.
We would like to point out right away that this is not an official MagSafe branded product, but rather a magnetic charger, capable of charging iPhone 12 with rather high standards, both in terms of build quality and in terms of charging speed.
How it's done
Upon opening the package, the peripheral looks very good, it is minimal, elegant and really modern. In a certain sense, it resumes the pedestal of the iMacs previous to the M1 series, with a silver aluminum body, broken by the white inserts, which represent the two wireless charging areas. Yes, because it is a 2-in-1 accessory, which can recharge earphones and iPhone 12. The materials are really good, the accessory is well assembled, free of any creaking, resistant, and with a solid touch and feel.
As already mentioned, it is capable of charging two devices at a time. Beware, however, not two smartphones. And in fact, on the upper part stands the first charging space, the magnetic one, which in fact characterizes the peripheral in a substantial way. It is designed to attract iPhone 12 into position, and allows you to recharge the terminal at 7.5W, both in a vertical position and in a horizontal position. The magnet is strong, at least when using the naked and raw iPhone, or a cover with internal magnet. In these cases the device remains in position without the possibility of accidental falls, and even by moving the peripheral, or using the iPhone while charging, there is not the slightest risk that it will move.
The lower mat is a dust collector
Different speech, however, when using covers not equipped with a magnet. We have tested some slim ones, the classic silicone ones for a few euros. In this case, the iPhone recharges, and remains in position, even if the “grip” is much weaker, and the risk of falling is quite high, even by moving it with simple taps on the screen.
The magnetic charging disc can also be tilted 30 degrees, allowing the user to make the most of the iPhone when it is charging. This is a great dock for on-screen content display, and even when not connected to power, it still has a particularly useful magnetic dock that looks great on your desk.
The other charging area, on the other hand, is on the bottom, where there is a sort of white mat. In this case, you can recharge any headset case equipped with Qi charging. There is no magnet, and this space allows you to recharge even a Qi smartphone, even iPhone if you want.
Just below there is a small white LED light, which cannot be turned off, and which could cause some discomfort during the night, making it particularly bright.
Charging times
Coming to the recharging times, first of all it is necessary to state a few things. The package comes with the USB-C USB-C cable, but not the wall power adapter. So, make sure you have one, at least with an output power of 18W. Also, remember that the wireless charging cradle for wireless earbuds will not function properly when using the wall charger with an output power of 5V / 2.4A or less.
That said, we have verified that the wireless charging speed of an iPhone is good, although of course not very fast, considering that it is a non-MagSafe charger and, therefore, with charging speed limited to 7.5W . To bring an iPhone 12 Mini from 20% to 100%, expect to take over 2 hours. From 30% to 45% you get there all in all quickly, in just 15 minutes, but as you increase in percentage, the times begin to lengthen dramatically. In fact, from 45% to 65%, 25 minutes, while after another 45 minutes at 80% charge.
These are good charging times for a wireless charger, which make wireless charging possible as an alternative to cable charging, which of course will always be faster. This type of solution can be used, then, for those who often work at the desk, and will therefore have to spend at least two hours working on the PC, waiting for the iPhone to recharge. An ideal solution, therefore, for those who want to always have an eye on the iPhone, perhaps positioned next to the monitor, ready to be consulted while working.
Conclusions
The Anker 2-in-1 magnetic wireless charger is well built, aesthetically valid and cost-effective, all in all low. If the wall adapter had been included it would certainly have been a must purchase, which we still recommend to all those who have an 18W adapter. Considering that a good adapter costs around 15 euros, or even a little bit more, the cost of the entire bundle becomes higher, but all in all still valid. The purchase is recommended for those who work a lot at the desk, so as to have the iPhone charging next to the monitor, with style, and always ready to use. Even a bedside charging in the evening is particularly convenient.
