Aukey Bass Station review, the stereo for the whole family that doubles up

Home Reviews ,,,,, We have tried dozens of Bluetooth speakers but none equals, for power and versatility, the new Aukey Bass Station that we received in the editorial office a few weeks ago. It is in fact a very powerful speaker that consists of two parts: a classic 15W wireless speaker that hooks up to a larger 10W bass reflex subwoofer to amplify the low frequencies and considerably increase the overall volume of the music being played.

It is the ideal solution to put music in the living room or in the garden during a party and possibly occasionally move the speaker only to other rooms in the house to throw some company music during household chores.

As did

The speaker (15 x 15 x 10 centimeters) simply rests on top of the subwoofer (13 x 13 x 28 centimeters) by matching the openings for the feet: in this way, the central plate will also be hooked with the contacts that allow you to recharge the 'speaker using the power supply of the subwoofer below. It is made entirely of satin polycarbonate of excellent workmanship with a metal grille that completely surrounds the four sides of the speaker, protecting the two 7.5W drivers each embedded in the sides of the case.

On the back of the speaker there are the AUX inputs for connecting an audio source via a 3.5mm jack cable and the microUSB socket to eventually recharge the battery of the speaker only, on the upper surface the (+), (- buttons are recessed. ) and (O) for managing music playback, the multifunction button (M) and a large rubber handle that makes it easier to grip and transport inside the house.

The subwoofer is much larger and is equipped with a cable with an Italian plug for the power supply. On the back there are also the ON / OFF switch and a red light that signals the switching on and off of the case. On the bottom there is the 10W speaker together with four thick rubber feet, while on the back there is the bass reflex port.

How does it work

It works like any other Bluetooth speaker: you need to turn on the speaker by holding down the (O) key for two seconds, thus activating the Bluetooth search mode and search for the device from your smartphone or tablet in the list of nearby Bluetooth devices. Be careful not to connect the AUX cable on the back because in that case when you turn on the speaker it will switch to cable mode without starting the wireless search.

Paired with your smartphone, simply start your favorite playlist and enjoy the music. The speaker can also remain above the subwoofer without using it: just do not turn on the rear switch but in this case you must also remember that in this way the speaker will work with the battery, so it will be limited in autonomy (about 7 hours with only one load).

By also turning on the subwoofer, the system will transfer the low frequencies to the subwoofer, enhancing the audio of the entire music reproduction in a few milliseconds, while also starting the recharge of the internal battery of the speaker.

A red front LED will indicate the recharge of the latter: the green color instead symbolizes the completion of the recharge.

You can also leave the subwoofer on to temporarily move the speaker to another room. The system is in fact designed to deactivate and activate the subwoofer when the speaker is removed and connected in the appropriate housing, thus allowing us to bring the music playing in another room without having to disconnect the cables: simply pull it upwards from the handle.

How is it going

Where this stereo most amazes is in the sound power. The overall 25W is noticeable, especially if you bring the playback volume to the maximum level. In this condition, the power is exaggerated for a medium-sized room (you just can't talk to another person in the same room) and it is quite bearable if placed in a large living room, as long as you are not immediately in front of the room. speaker.

The combination of speaker and subwoofer is such that it can actually replace even a small hi-fi system with the advantage of wireless and the portability of the speaker only, which alone is capable of adequately filling even a bedroom.

What you notice by hooking and unhooking the speaker from the subwoofer while playing a piece of music is not only the decrease in volume and power, but also that of the sound performance of the bass. Like any other subwoofer, in fact, the lower case is designed to reproduce all the low frequencies at a higher level, with the result that without this a song like “Bass Can You Hear Me” totally loses the main effect, that is to vibrate the timpani at each bass note.

Apart from the subwoofer, the audio quality of the speaker is superior to that of many speakers of the same size, with an excellent rendering of the entire sound spectrum: the high frequencies are clear and crystalline while the mids are rather filling.

We tried to move the whole system to various points in the house and based on our tests we can say that the best position of this speaker is in the center of a room, possibly on the floor. The subwoofer in fact exploits the surface on which it rests to diffuse the audio, which will be transmitted both downwards and to the two upper sides of the case. Even above a desk it sounds good, as long as it is clear and rather wide: on a small table the quality is excellent but most of the power is lost in the reproduction of low frequencies.

Conclusions

Those who choose Aukey Bass Station do so mainly because they are looking for a single solution to listen to music at home from a common speaker with the further possibility, however, of connecting it to the subwoofer to create a small hi-fi system in the living room or in any another room in the house. If there is no latter need, then it is better to save money by purchasing a classic wireless speaker, which will not differ much from the Aukey speaker in quality and sound power.

Probably if those who try this system are not an audiophile and do not have high demands regarding audio precision, they could actually decide to reduce the entire music system in the house to the minimum by eliminating stereos and small speakers to opt for this solution, powerful and at the same time. versatile time.
