Aukey EP-B33 review, earphones with collar and built-in equalizer

For years, our editorial staff has been submitting dozens of tests on headphones and earphones for sale online to the attention of its readers. In this article we will talk about Aukey EP-B33, a system of earphones with collar and magnetic block that differs from the others not only for the quality of the materials or the sound performance, but above all for the presence of a button that controls the equalization. of music reproduction, thus allowing to balance the various frequencies without having to use particular applications.

How they are made

The main structure is made of very soft rubber. Although the collar has its own shape that cannot be changed, there is no central core – usually in metal or polycarbonate – that stiffens it, therefore it is much more flexible than others.

Potentially you could even tie them: the result is that they seemed much more comfortable than others because they can easily adapt to your clothing, be it the hood of a sweatshirt or the high collar of a sweater or a more bulky coat.

They are also very light (between collar, wire and earphones our kitchen scale tells us that they weigh less than 40 grams) and the cable is of the flat type, therefore more resistant to tangles than the thinnest cylindrical cables and this does not mind since there are no bags or cases in the package for easier storage.

To recognize the left earpiece from the right one, just look at the letter L (which stands for left, left) and the R (which stands for right, right) printed on the inner edge of the terminal portion of the collar.

On the right one, among other things, there are all the controls, whose access seemed a tad uncomfortable to us due to the position that does not allow you to look at them directly, so you have to take your hand and mentally memorize their position.

Here we find specifically the key to turn the earphones on and off, the “+” and “-” keys and a dedicated button to control the equalization accompanied by an LED indicator. On the bottom there is instead the USB-C socket for recharging the internal battery, protected by a rigid rubber cap that can be a bit difficult to remove if you have too short finger nails.

To make them elegant there is a brushed aluminum cover with a golden finish on the two ends of the collar which we also find as a frame on the external face of the two earphones. We particularly liked the latter because they are quite small and very comfortable: they slip into the ears and stabilize there using the right in-ear pads, available in three different sizes (S, M and L) in packs to adapt them. to the various conformations of the ear cavity.

In our opinion, the choice of protecting the internal drivers with a metal mesh seemed excellent (generally to save a little and lower the final cost of the product, we prefer to use a plastic protection which, however, over time is more difficult to clean and more easy to break) and the integration of a magnetic system that allows you to lock the two earphones together reducing significantly the jolts on the chest when worn while walking or running.

How are they doing

The audio quality is in line with the price for which the Aukey EP-B33 earphones are offered. The sound performance is very high, with a very good reproduction of the various frequencies thanks to the presence of 10mm drivers built in graphene.

As we said, the difference is made by the small button for changing the equalization. With a click you can switch from one to the other without having to listen to your music and at the same time adjust the presence of the various frequencies with a dedicated app. Just one click and you go from Q1 to Q2, another to select Q3 and a third to return to Q1 and start the lap again.

The manual does not explain what one or the other does, but if our ear does not deceive us it seemed to us that with the Q1 you have a Flat equalization, with Q2 you increase the bass while with Q3 the mid frequencies are more present. high.

So if you're training in the gym with a playlist loaded with heavily bass-heavy tracks, go for Q2; if you are listening to Masini or you want to give more emphasis to the voice, the Q3 is better. If you want to leave the frequencies at the same level, you are on the safe side with Q1.

It seems nonsense because with the apps you can also have a more precise adjustment by adjusting the rockers of the individual frequencies, but eliminating the interaction with the phone to be able to change the equalization in a bit with a click, for us it is a good point in favor, especially if you are cycling and wearing gloves.

Among the other advantages is the USB-C port which, in addition to eliminating the number of cables to use if you already have a recent generation smartphone, enables fast charging: 10 minutes are enough to listen to music for about two consecutive hours, while to recharge all the 130 mAh of the battery you need one hour of recharging (which brings the total autonomy to 8 hours).

The Aukey EP-B33 earphones are all this but also much more: they are in fact equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology which, compared to the previous one, increases the range of action and decreases consumption. They are also IPX6 certified so they easily resist sweat and splashes of water and finally they are aptX (so they are close to CD quality).
