Google has advertised the release of the new version of the most popular browser in the world. Chrome 89 is among us and is being distributed on all desktop (Windows, Mac and Linux) and mobile (Android and partly iOS) platforms . The latest release includes several new features that enrich the navigation tools available to users, including a couple of long-announced and long-awaited options on the stable version.
Let's start with the new user profile selector . At the first start the browser will in fact show the list of the various previously logged in users to choose from, a convenient function especially for those who share the same workstation. In the drop-down menu next to the omnibox a picker has been added from which it is possible to switch between profiles. At the first access Chrome will invite the user to activate the synchronization of bookmarks, passwords, history and more on all devices, then presenting some options to customize the profile by choosing from a palette of predefined colors.
With Chrome 89 finally the reading list is made available to everyone ! A feature expected for years and until recently only available on iOS. To add a page to the list just click on the star in the omnibox, after which you can find the site in the window positioned all the way to the right on the favorites bar. The scrolling list is divided between “read” and “unread” and has two buttons: one to mark a page as read and one to delete it from the list.
After updating, you can activate the new search function between tabs , especially useful for those who are used to keeping several tabs open at the same time. By enabling the flag # enable-tab-search you will see a round button with an arrow appear down in the upper right corner of the window. Clicking on it will open a window showing 5 open pages with the possibility of scrolling to find the others. At the top, instead, you can search among the open tabs.
Finally, there are a long series of innovations that we could define as minor as the new permissions for notifications: now by default the browser blocks those sites to which you would hardly give consent , but if you want to activate them you can always click on the crossed bell symbol in the omnibox.
When you type an address Chrome 89 will try as the first choice to use HTTPS returning to the old HTTP in case of need (news that will arrive later on iOS). For the rest, the WebHID APIs have been enabled to improve the connectivity of human interfaces (keyboard, mouse and joypad) and the Web Serial APIs that allow pages internet access to 3D printers without drivers or adapters. Web NFC is activated by default to allow sites to read NFC tags and native decoding of AVIF images is introduced in Android (a more efficient format than JPEG or WebP, with HDR support).
