Home Reviews ,,,,,It is not the best performing smartphone we have ever tried but it has everything you need to guarantee a smooth use of the most common contents and a solid management of the most important functions.
Cubot P20 is the perfect combination of quality and price as it combines latest generation technologies with a large screen and good robustness for a final price that does not reach 150 euros. We have tried it in the last few days, we are ready to tell you about it.
How Cubot P20 is made
Beautiful, indeed beautiful, the shell of the phone. Our trial version is what is called Nero Scuro on the site, in reality it is more than just a black. In fact, everything lies in the incidence of light on the back: at particular angles it looks like a very ordinary glossy black phone, in others the lower half lights up with an intense purple that gradually fades upwards. It is something that finally makes the phone different from the crowd especially because shapes and sizes are not all that original.
The profile is in fact rounded, with evident bevels at the corners and around the frame. All for the benefit of a very solid grip. With this in mind, we have also re-evaluated the polycarbonate, which makes up the entire body of the phone, compared to the more common aluminum. In fact, the latter will also be more resistant but often obliges you to accompany the phone to a silicone case (who writes just can't stand them but for example with OnePlus 6 it is impossible to do without it), while Cubot P20 does not slip and can also be used without bulky cases. By the way, in the package you will find a transparent one that adds thickness and bulk but certainly – for those who habitually use it – increases the resistance to shocks and falls, completely keeping away any scratches, even deep ones.
On the back there is the usual circular sensor for scanning fingerprints and a double camera accompanied by LED flash, while the Standby button, the volume rocker, the 3.5mm headphone jack hole are adequately positioned along the profile. on the bottom speaker, microphone and microUSB input for battery charging.

The display
Another point in favor of the Cubot P20 for the screen. It is a 6.18-inch diagonal panel, with a Full HD + resolution of 2,246 x 1,080 pixels, accompanied by the increasingly widespread notch for speakers, cameras and sensors, which allow you to have a large screen inside a device that is not too much bulky (specifically it measures 15.6 x 7.5 x 0.85 cm).
The resolution is great for watching a streaming video and the screen is large enough to display a large number of content, or you can think of taking advantage of the scaling of text and content on the screen to have larger fonts without having to sacrifice too much l 'user interface, precisely because there is plenty of room to balance the two.
The brightness is good and outdoors in bright sunlight it is still quite visible.
The processor
Datasheet says: MTK6750T Octa Core 1.5GHz CPU with 4GB RAM. Good numbers that, according to our tests, allow us to obtain sufficient performance for the management of the most common operations. So, no problems with email, with messaging apps and not even with 3 or 4 tabs open on the browser.
Also smooth playback of streaming videos and the use of apps and games that are less demanding from the hardware point of view (an example? Candy Crush Saga runs without problems).
After starting some apps – a concrete example with YouTube – the user interface goes into hiccups for the first few seconds, and then stabilizes when startup is complete. This going to heavy duty at the first opening of the applications is a bit the central node of Cubot P20, which overall is slightly less responsive than obviously more expensive smartphones.
Forget about playing it with more demanding apps like Asphalt 9 (but even the previous titles are no less): the apps work as well, but the gameplay is compromised and the phone tends to overheat easily.
But the capacity is good: 64 GB is enough to carry lots of documents and store the photos and videos received through the messaging apps.
Multimedia
Speaking of photos: The 20 + 2MP dual rear camera is by no means the best choice for documenting holidays or birthday parties. They may be fine for photographing the price tag of a product on supermarket shelves to alert the partner of a good offer, but it is by no means sufficient for making photographs to print or even just to keep digitally on the phone.
The “blur” effect in portrait photos is completely to be avoided: the phone simply creates a circular frame leaving a small area in focus in the center. There is no Artificial Intelligence system to recognize the face and create a customized blur of the scene.

Battery
On the other hand, the overall performance of the battery is good. Leaving the phone for a whole day in Airplane mode the overall energy went from 69% to 67%, while with other smartphones in a similar test we noticed a greater discharge, sometimes even more than 10%.
Autonomy is also excellent during normal use of the device. The 4,000 mAh declared by the manufacturer allowed us to easily reach a day and a half of use (2 full days if we consider the 8 hours in airplane mode during the night) between emails, social networks and browsers for consulting some news sites.
Conclusions
Cubot P20 cannot and must not be the first phone for those who cannot do without technology. In our opinion it can be a good compromise – especially for the price, little less than 150 euros – in three cases.
As a second phone, perhaps to take to the beach without worrying too much about protecting it from the sand or panicking in case of theft; as the first phone for a child, perhaps not to put too much money in his hand, to make him available 24 hours a day and at the same time give him the opportunity to entertain himself with some apps; as a smartphone for an older adult, for a new grandfather or in general for those who have no big claims other than to stay connected with friends and family between Whatsapp and Facebook.
