In the box of the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple puts a jack-Lightning adapter to allow buyers to connect the “old” wired headphones through the only grip of the new smartphones. This is a small tribute that facilitates the adaptation to the new strategy which consists in permanently eliminating the 3.5mm audio jack, invented in 1878 and never changed since then. Apple's is not a whim but apparently the only way to guarantee complete waterproofing of the smartphone: on the other hand, the Lightning socket can still work for connecting audio peripherals via cable and with the advantage – not to be underestimated – of offering a “all digital” connection for superior audio quality.

The adapter, as we said, therefore acts as an intermediary to convert the classic jack plug into Lightning but does nothing else. To have something more at the moment the only alternative is from third-party manufacturers and among these there is Dodocool DA123, an accessory that we have been able to try recently by evaluating its actual capabilities in the field.

Sold in a minimal cardboard box, the adapter is visibly larger than Apple's but for more than one reason. First of all, the cable (13 cm) is characterized by a thicker sheath (about 3 millimeters) and, therefore, should be more resistant over time. At least, this was our impression by touching it and exerting some bending along the structure.

Also the Lightning connector is larger because it is protected by a solid plastic structure well maintained then by a layer of brushed aluminum that recalls the iPhone chassis and certainly improves its durability. There is no way of bruising it by trying to bend it with your hands and even by pressing it hard it shows no sign of giving way under our fingers. The same cannot be said for the other end of the cable, where we find the jack socket from 3.5 mm: the latter, including the remote control that accompanies it, is made of poor quality plastic: it does not flex, but when trying to twist the two ends of the entire structure the creaks are evident.

The jack port, we said, accompanies a remote control (rather large, 5.4 x 1.3 x 0.8 cm) where there are three small buttons on one side dedicated to management music reproduction and, on the other hand, a small button for bass amplification, the only peculiarity of this product.

We did some tests using the adapter with the classic EarPods. In the audio quality there is no difference between listening to the same song from the same device (we did some tests on the iPhone 6s) with or without an adapter. From this point of view, therefore, there is no need to fear a loss of quality but neither can we hope for an evident improvement in the use of the Lightning socket: this accessory in fact limits itself to adapting headphones with jack plug to iPhone 7 and future. , equipped only with a Lightning port, without bringing benefits in the final quality.

The difference, on the other hand, is perceived when you press the Bass Boost button *: there is actually an enhancement of the low frequencies, even if there is also an amplification of the overall volume of the track. According to our tests it corresponds to about two clicks of the Volume + button and in the comparison there is in fact a slight difference in the perception of the bass melodies. However, we did not notice this significant difference between simply increasing the volume and activating the dedicated bass mode so much that we are convinced to think of it as an adapter that can improve the performance of specific categories of music. Rather, they can work in consideration of listening to music in the open air, where traffic can in some cases exceed the maximum volume of the headphones: the boost will not only improve the performance of the lower frequencies but will give an excellent boost to the overall volume. listening, overwhelming external noises.

Conclusions and price to the public

Based on these considerations, Dodocool DA123 can replace the classic Apple adapter to partially improve the audio output and increase the maximum volume allowed: just a click of the button to benefit from both advantages. It is on sale on Amazon for 33.99 euros.
