At MWC17 Doogee brought Shoot 2, on which there is still no definite information regarding price and release date. The present, on the other hand, is called Shoot 1, an Android terminal with a double chamber, which offers a certainly attractive and competitive price. However, there is no shortage of compromises in this 5.5-inch phablet.
Aesthetics
Doogee Shoot 1 is presented in the most classic of carton packs, very minimal, typical of almost all the “cinesoni” available on the internet. The terminal does not offer particularly original shapes and it will be enough to take it in hand to have a feeling of deja vu. Not bad, however, given that by now the panorama seems to be heading towards a standardization, with the exception of the new LG and the future Galaxy S8. Curious is the presence in the sales bundle of a silicone cover, which has built-in plugs to seal the jack input and the micro USB charging ones. But be careful: this is not synonymous with waterproofing.
It only takes a few moments to realize that you have hands a low cost terminal. The back is made of plastic and the materials used are not the top. However, it is not badly assembled, and there are no particular creaks, although certainly the plastic does not return a feeling of value. On the front there is a physical button, which seems to have taken as inspiration that of the iPhone 7: the stroke of this button is in fact almost nothing. Incorporates a fingerprint sensor, not too reliable to be honest. Next to the central button the two keys, with back function and options, typical Android.
Classic power keys and volume rocker positioned on the sides, where there is the trolley for the two SIMs (not nano), while the two rooms are positioned on the back. Even in this case, the assembly is still sufficient: they are perfectly symmetrical and also in this case without noticeable creaking. Of course, we will come back to quality later. In short, on an aesthetic level, the terminal is without infamy and without praise: it does not shine and does not scandalize
Technical characteristics
It is from the point of view of the technical characteristics that the terminal seems, unfortunately, to say very little, both on paper and especially in everyday use. The CPU is a Mediatek MT6737T , Quad-Core clocked at 1.5 GHz, while the graphics processor is the MALI-T720 MP2 GPU, assisted by 2 GB of RAM , even if free, about 700 MB are always left. Also from the hardware point of view, a low-end terminal, therefore, for those who are satisfied and have no big claims. Not that you can't use it to enjoy the entire Android ecosystem, but lag or small delays in starting applications or functions are not uncommon. However, it allows you to browse in complete tranquility, take advantage of social networks and messaging apps, play with almost all the titles on the store (Real Racing 3 is really fluid), and obviously take advantage of the telephone part without problems. From this point of view, in fact, we did not find any problems in reception, and even the audio, both in capsule and hands-free, was good.
As for the display it is a diagonal 5.5 inch Full HD panel from Sharp . Again this is only sufficient, with a yellowish color slant, even when set at cold temperatures. The writer has always liked Sharp panels, but in this case they are not particularly excellent units. If placed next to another terminal, you immediately notice an overall lower yield, even if in everyday life, using it without terms of comparison is not perceived in completely negative terms. For the record, however, the panel must be acknowledged to be quite accurate with regards to the touches. Often and willingly, in fact, Chinese terminals suffer from “slow” panels, which do not take fast taps well and which give various problems in typing texts. Shoot 1, on the other hand, responds well to touches, it is not a splinter but it defends itself well.
On the other hand, the internal memory is scarce, which apps like CPU-Z give about 10 GB out of the 16 declared available. The battery behavior is also quite anomalous. In everyday life, the terminal leads quietly to the evening, but when the battery reaches minimum thresholds of 20%, you will see a sudden drop in the charge. If other terminals, with 20% still manage to go on for hours, Shoot 1, on the other hand, is to be considered at the end of the line. It is possible to activate Super energy saving modes, which transform the terminal into a mobile phone, but even in this case it is advisable to reach an energy source as soon as possible. Charging the battery, despite the charger included in the package indicates 5A output, is absolutely standard and it will take an hour and a half to bring the battery from 0 to 100%.
Multimedia
Two bedrooms does not necessarily mean superior photographic department. Shoot 1 is the prime example. On paper, the numbers of Shoot 1 are not bad: double rear camera 13MP + 8MP SHOOT , able to combine two lenses in parallel, each with its own sensor, for a DSLR-style depth of field, with the 8MP sensor.
In everyday life, numbers don't translate into quality. Not that the multimedia department is insufficient, but it certainly does not excel and the photos are absolutely in line with those of a Chinese medium / low range with a single camera. The interface of the Camera app is not optimized for dual cameras and the only option present in this regard is the mode for photos with depth of field. We leave you to an image gallery, not retouched, which shows exactly the quality of the shots. The shots are rather slow, especially those at night with the flash: at the touch of the button the shutter sound follows almost immediately, while the flash starts at a later time and the shot takes place again later. In short, it is better to stay a few seconds with the smartphone still in order to get a satisfactory photo. Insufficient, as expected, the photos with the front camera.
Blurred background effect
Software
At the software level Shoot 1 is equipped with Android 6.0 , practically stock , except for some customized Doogee applications and old apks based on prehistoric versions of apps, such as calendar and messages. It doesn't take much to modernize it, by downloading updated versions of Google Calendar and Messages from the Play Store. There is some proprietary customization, such as advanced screen caps, which allow you to crop to capture only part of the screen, or double tap the soft touch buttons to activate one-handed mode. For the rest, the experience is typical of an Android terminal.
Conclusions
Doogee Shoot 1 is a modest terminal, it costs little and basically allows you to enjoy the whole Android ecosystem without any particular problems. It's not a splinter and the camera department doesn't have the extra gear you'd expect from the dual rear module. However, it costs little and offers all the features that one would expect from a medium / low-end terminal.
On Amazon it is available for 126.99 euros, in the different colors silver, black and gold .
