Home Reviews ,,,,, There are now many, many, the Android set top boxes capable of transforming the TV in the living room into a real multimedia center. Among the many Cyber Layman try H6 Mini, which thanks to its 3GB of RAM, and other technical features, turns out to be among the best and most powerful in the price range.
Let's start from the aesthetics, which has nothing different from many other exponents of the same genre, except having a small display on the front, which always leaves the time in plain sight. Not a main feature, but rather pleasant and useful.
In terms of connectivity, the H6 Mini offers numerous ports: input for IR extension, the LAN port for wired connections, HDMI for connecting to monitors and TVs, AV output, SPDIF, two USB 3.0 and a slot for MicroSD.
In terms of technical characteristics it is one of the best exponents in value for money: for 35 euros the box offers a Mali-T720 GPU, Allwinner H6 CPU, quad core, Cortex A53, 3GB of RAM, and an internal memory of 32 GB .
The operating system is Android 7.1.2, but it is completely graphically customized, with a UI optimized for the living room TV, which we will return to shortly.
It decodes videos in H.264 and H.265 formats and can read files in 4K, ASF, AVI, DAT, FLV, ISO, MKV, MOV, MPEG, MPG, TS, VOB and WMV format. It can also be used to browse images on the TV in BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG and TIFF formats or even to listen to music in Dolby Surround 5.1 by playing MP3, AAC, DDP, FLAC, OGG, WAV and WMA files. It supports up to 6K resolutions, although this feature will not be fully exploitable by almost all living room TVs in our homes.
How does it work
Beyond the spec sheet, this H6 TV Box works really well, much better than any other set top box of the same price. In fact, it works much better than other more expensive boxes. The 3GB of RAM seems to make a difference: the UI is smooth, free of slowdowns, and the system responds promptly to remote control inputs.
While some boxes in this price range show uncertainties even in the passage of the cursor from one part of the main screens to the other, H6 is instead very fluid. You navigate the UI quickly and quickly, you access the apps very quickly, and also the transition from one to the other is absolutely fluid.
Moreover, a particularly important detail is the possibility, in the advanced display settings, of being able to force a certain color mode: while almost all TV Boxes have problems on some old Philips and Samsung TVs (with colors that invert after a few seconds ) this set top box offers the “Force RGB” options, which allow you to enjoy the box even on older TVs, which may have difficulty displaying the colors correctly.
Software
It has already been said that the H6 TV Box is based on Android 7: it doesn't matter, because the main screen is completely customized. In this case it is one of the best UIs visible on a low-cost peripheral like this. The windows are quite minimal and well arranged on the screen, all easily accessible with a single click on the remote control.
There is the pre-installed Google Play Store, which is why it will be sufficient to access it to download the known apps in the Android landscape. We have successfully tested apps such as Rai Play, Mediaset Play, DAZN and Netflix. The latter is not present on the store, but it will be sufficient to install the official APK available on sites such as apkmirror.
It should be noted that the set top box is recognized as a smartphone / tablet, which is why the apps will be better managed with a mouse and an external keyboard connected, or even with a remote control with AirMouse functions. In any case, a remote control is available in the bundle for managing the system UI and for navigating on some apps optimized for use on TV.
Conclusions
H6 Mini is among the best, if not the best set top box in this price range: at 35 euros there is no more responsive and faster multimedia device than this, with an appreciable interface and the whole Android universe to be downloaded via Google Play.
