Home Reviews ,,,,, In the past few days we have tried Excelvan BL-59, a video projector that makes the presence of Android its main strength. Thanks to the built-in operating system it is possible to install practically all the apps, thus using it without necessarily having to connect it to a source for the acquisition of the contents to be projected.
However, there is no lack of connection options to other devices: for example, it is possible to clone what appears on the screen of smartphones and tablets using Android mirroring without a cable, or project the computer screen via cable via an HDMI socket. There are also two USB ports for reading the contents of flash drives and portable disks: it's the all-rounder of projections.

The package is particularly complete: the projector, well packaged and protected from any knocks through a thick housing in soft plastic material, is accompanied by:

As did
With a classic design, the external shell of Excelvan BL-59 is made of glossy polycarbonate. The dimensions are also quite standard and close to those of many other projectors. Specifically, it measures 32 x 24 x 12 centimeters and weighs two and a half kilos. Below is a list of ports, sockets and parts present on the various sides of the projector:
Upper facade Here we find some rubber buttons for controlling the main functions, specifically:
There are also two dials: one allows you to tilt the projection slightly, the other allows you to adjust the focus.
Front side Here is the lens flanked by the IR sensor for the remote control
Rear side Here we find a series of sockets and inputs, specifically:
Right side On the right side of Excelvan BL-59 there is the grille through which air is sucked in to cool the internal components. It is covered by a removable filter which facilitates periodic cleaning.
Left side On this side we find the built-in speakers, well protected from dust and shocks through a special grille.
Lower facade On the bottom, at the corners, four rubber feet protrude which can be removed to fix the projector to a possible support using the screws included in the package. There is also a fifth hole to screw the mini tripod (also in the box) to slightly tilt the projection upwards.

What can it do
As anticipated, there are different ways of using Excelvan BL-59, ranging from reading content from external media to connecting to other devices wirelessly or via cable, up to carefree use through the integrated Android operating system.
Use with Android Let's start with the latter, which seemed to us the most interesting but also the most limited (at least from the point of view of the tools provided). Switch-on is very quick: in less than 10 seconds the projector will be immediately operational.
The main screen highlights the main functions of the projector: they are basically completely customizable “folders”.
The projector used with Android is quite responsive. It is quite fast in the search and in the management of the various functions via remote control, while it seemed rather slow in the WiFi connection to the router for downloading the apps. Software such as Adobe Reader, weighing 50-60MB, is downloaded in about 5 minutes.
The main problem is in the remote control. Theoretically it would allow you to do everything like searching for apps, typing on a virtual keyboard on the screen and so on, but it is rather inconvenient for most of the operations and with some apps it creates more of a problem.
For example, the YouTube app does not recognize directional arrows, so we are unable to move between items and select videos on the screen, search for new ones in the search bar or do anything else.
With other apps such as Adobe Reader it remains impossible to close the tutorial that appears at the first start, making it practically impossible to use the app for reading PDF files.
The solution is only one: buy a Bluetooth mini-keyboard for TV, thus having a much more practical controller available. Among the settings, the projector indicates the compatibility with external accessories via Bluetooth, so if you want you can also use any keyboard accompanied by a trackpad or a mouse.
No limits, and this is good, to the applications that can be installed. This allowed us to overcome the problems of applications installed by default, with a difficult and not very functional interface. For example, we could install the FileManger + to access the content of the connected USB sticks and VLC for playing any video format that was not recognized by the integrated player.
Viewing files via USB Thanks to the ability to install apps from the Google Play Store, it is possible to view the most disparate files contained in external memories, such as a USB key. This way you can use the projector in a classroom or conference room without having to have your computer with you. Just the key with the files, the right apps, and playing PowerPoint slides or documents on the big screen becomes child's play.
The system works well and does not give problems even with high resolution videos. The only drawback is that all files must be downloaded to the internal memory. There are 8 GB, which means that large files do not have enough space and cannot be played, while with documents and PDFs in the long run there is the risk of saturating it with old files that will have to be removed manually.

Projection from smartphone or tablet via Wireless Wireless streaming of what appears on a smartphone screen is possible. The router acts as a bridge between the two devices, which must therefore be connected to the same WiFi network. Then just start the Miracast app on the projector and activate the related screen transmission options on your device: time 10 seconds and the screen will be cloned on the projector.
Here, too, the system works pretty well. You perceive a few milliseconds of latency between what you do on the smartphone screen compared to what is projected by the Excelvan BL-59, but all in all it can be a valid solution when you want to show phone contents on the big screen.
Appreciated the possibility of holding down the finger to bring up a sort of virtual laser pointer to indicate a particular point of the projection directly from the touch screen of the device, while the streaming does not shine when playing a video: very often some frames skip or parts of them remain frozen for a few seconds overlapping the other images flowing in the background. For videos, opt for USB sticks or cable streaming.

Projection from computer via cable Just connect your computer to the HDMI socket and that's it. A few seconds and the screen will be reproduced on the projection. This is the configuration we liked the most from a productivity point of view. The projection is instantaneous, there are no latency problems even with videos and no software installation is required. Since it is only a screen mirroring, everything is managed from the computer and any limits are therefore linked only to the latter.
How are you
Apart from the limitations of the modes of use described above, the overall quality of the projector is quite high. By placing Excelvan BL-59 at a distance of 6 meters from the wall or panel (possibly white in color), a projection of the size of a 200-inch screen is obtained, which becomes 32 '' if the distance is just 1 meter.
In both cases, the brightness is excellent: even in a bright room it is possible to clearly distinguish the projected contents. The contrast is very good and the colors are vivid and well defined. The resolution is also very good: the pixels are noticeable up close but you will hardly see a projection less than a couple of meters, and at these distances the overall quality is really high.
The audio is also very good, especially if we consider that a minimum of noise the projector when turned on does. In any case, the audio of the speakers is also superior to that of many other competing solutions that offer the same functionality. It lacks a bit in the maximum volume level, so if used with a crowded audience it is better to combine it with an external speaker (perhaps Bluetooth) while if it is used at home with the family the integrated speaker may also be sufficient.

Conclusions
Excelvan BL-59 is a good product, especially as regards the possibilities of use. The real selling point is Android, especially if it is accompanied by a separately purchased Bluetooth remote controller. In this way you are totally independent from an external device (smartphone, tablet or computer) for the acquisition of the contents to be projected, letting yourself be guided only by the contents found on the net or at most those stored on a USB key.
