Google has been working on a foldable smartphone for some time. The company first confirmed the “study of foldable displays and many other new hardware technologies” in May 2019. At the time, however, there were no plans to bring a foldable smartphone to market.
In August of last year we glimpsed new references to the foldable Pixel device, when a leaked internal document mentioned a device codenamed “passport”. While the document didn't reveal much about the phone itself, it did reference the launch date as the fourth quarter of 2021. Now that we're just a few months away from the alleged date, new details have leaked.
According to a new report from The Elec, the alleged Google Pixel Fold will feature a 7.6-inch foldable display from Samsung Display with an ultra-thin glass (UTG) layer. Based on that, Google could announce the Pixel Fold alongside the Pixel 6 series later this year.
Along with information regarding the Pixel Fold, The Elec's latest report also sheds light on a number of other upcoming folding devices. He claims that Xiaomi, Honor and OPPO are also working on 2-in-1 devices with UTG, likely to hit the market by the end of the year or early 2022.
